‘Goodbye, Racist!’: Passengers Cheer As Unruly Man Gets Booted From Plane

A passenger was kicked off a United Airlines flight Saturday for allegedly making racist comments about other travelers aboard United Airlines Flight 1118 from Chicago to Houston.

The man, who has not been named, asked two passengers in traditional Pakistani clothes if they had a bomb, CBS station KHOU reported.

When they didn’t hear him ― or tired to ignore him ― he repeated the question, prompting several other passengers to complain to the flight crew, one of those passengers told the station.

He then spoke to someone sitting behind him, who was traveling with a passenger of Indian decent.

“The person ahead of us turned around and asked where my boyfriend was from. My boyfriend said, ‘It’s none of your business,’” the passenger told KHOU. “At that point, he said all illegals and all foreigners need to leave the country.”

Footage from the plane shows him complaining about “illegals” and then being asked to leave by a flight attendant. A woman traveling with him was also removed from the plane.

She gave passengers the finger.

“This is not Trump’s America,” the woman filming him said. “Goodbye, racist!”

The man replied: “Hey, I’ll come back. You’ll be gone.”

He did not come back.

United Airlines spokesman Jonathan Guerin told The Washington Post:

“We removed two passengers for making others feel uncomfortable on the flight and for saying some inappropriate things to customers on the flight. Most customers appreciate a place where they feel safe and where they’re not going to be attacked and we want to provide that.”

He said the two passengers were placed on a later flight.

Angry Constituents Hammer Tom Cotton At Town Hall: ‘Do Your Job’

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) faced hundreds of angry constituents at a town hall Wednesday night who grilled him for two hours on the Affordable Care Act, immigration, President Donald Trump’s administration and other issues.

The town hall, held at a high school in Springdale, Arkansas, was raucous throughout. About 2,000 people packed the auditorium and frequently drowned Cotton out with cheers, boos and jeers. Some attendees waved red cards when the senator said something they didn’t agree with.

The uproar hit a peak when a 25-year-old constituent pressed the senator on whether he intends to preserve the Affordable Care Act’s treatment protections for people with preexisting conditions. (Congressional Republicans, including Cotton, have vowed to repeal Obamacare but have yet to lay out a comprehensive plan for replacing it.) She kicked off her remarks by asking who in the auditorium was affected by the Affordable Care Act:

She then explained she suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that affects the body’s connective tissues and blood vessels.

“Without coverage for preexisting conditions, I will die,” she said. “Will you commit today to replacement protections for those Arkansans like me who will die or lose their quality of life or otherwise be unable to be participating citizens, trying to get their part of the American dream? Will you commit to replacement in the same way that you’ve committed to repeal?”

The auditorium erupted in cheers as the crowd gave her a standing ovation. Cotton then attempted to dodge the question and asked for others in the audience to offer comments before he gave an answer.

That didn’t go over well with the bulk of the crowd, which began booing and chanting, “Do your job.” Cotton eventually returned to her question but largely evaded her request for specifics on how he intends to preserve coverage for preexisting conditions.

Watch part of their exchange:

Another woman then confronted Cotton on his support for Obamacare repeal. She said her husband is dying, and she challenged Cotton to sit down with her and her family and hear about their experiences with public health care.

“You want to stand there … and expect us to be calm, cool and collected,” she said. “Well, what kind of insurance do you have?”

Cotton faced many other questions on his support for Trump ― one attendee asked how he could support a president who “wants to grab women by the pussy” ― and his congressional record. He was pressed on his opposition to gun control measures, his proposed immigration policies and the president’s tax returns. Almost every answer was met with boos.

The last question went to a 7-year-old boy concerned about Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and his reported plan to cut funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

“Donald Trump makes Mexicans not important to people who are in Arkansas who like Mexicans, like me,” said the boy. “He’s deleting all the parts in PBS Kids just to make a wall. He’s going to do that. He shouldn’t. He shouldn’t do all that stuff just for a wall.”

Cotton attempted to answer by praising America as a “melting pot,” a comment met with jeers.

“You should listen to the next generation,” yelled one attendee.

“We want Mexico to be a healthy, strong partner,” Cotton said. “We also have to protect our own citizens … and that’s where the wall comes in.”

You can watch the full town hall meeting here.

Other Republicans have faced similarly tense crowds at town halls across the country during the congressional recess. On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was berated by a woman who was upset with Republican accountability on jobs and health care. Republican Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Dave Brat of Virginia have been confronted in recent days.

And some Republicans are avoiding the meetings altogether, turning to conference calls. Some are threatening to cancel public appearances if people disrupt them.

Trump, meanwhile, has attempted to dismiss the town hall demonstrations as “planned out by liberal activists.

Check Out Mitch McConnell’s Face As An Angry Voter Lets Him Have It

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) got an earful from an angry constituent at a luncheon in Kentucky on Tuesday.

The exchange began innocently enough, with the woman saying she loved McConnell.

“Thank you,” he replied. “I needed that.”

But he wouldn’t thank her for what she said next. Check it out:

The unidentified voter berated McConnell over jobs and health care, saying:

“The last I heard, these coal jobs are not coming back and now these people don’t have the insurance they need because they’re poor. And they work those coal mines, and they’re sick, the veterans are sick, the veterans are broken down, they’re not getting what they need.”

Here’s McConnell’s reaction:

“If you can answer any of that, I’ll sit down and shut up like Elizabeth Warren,” she concluded.

She was referring to a procedural move McConnell used on the Senate floor earlier this month that silenced Sen. Warren (D-Mass) when she tried to read a letter critical of Jeff Sessions, the then-Alabama senator who is now U.S. attorney general.

For whatever reason, that line broke his poker face:

I hope you feel better now,” he told her.

“I do,” she said. “I do.”

“Anybody understood anything I had to say?” he then asked the audience. He did not answer her question or many of the others posed to him at the event.

A reporter from local ABC station WHAS asked why he declined to respond.

There’s a difference between making a speech and asking questions,” McConnell replied.

Earlier, McConnell had been greeted by about 1,000 protesters outside the event, a luncheon for the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce in Lawrenceburg, The Associated Press reported.

7 Must-Try Morning Rituals From Cities Across America That Will Make You Infinitely Happier Tomorrow

Rise and shine! Then eat your corn tortillas, sing along to Baha’i prayers, or dip your toes in the ocean—depending on where you live, of course. A morning ritual, or just a little ‘me-time’ first thing, can help you start your day off on the right foot. That’s why we’ve partnered with Tropicana to get the scoop on what people in cities across America do first thing in the morning to kick off their day right. Give them a read, and then try some of these rituals yourself for an AM boost.

“Everyday at about 6 a.m. my two-year-old son jumps in bed with my husband and me for some morning snuggles; then his five-year-old sister joins us about half an hour later. Eventually, we all get dressed, eat breakfast and pack lunches, before heading off to school/work. On our morning drive, we typically sing, and boogie to a couple of Baha’i prayers put to music by our friend Devon Gundry.” – Jacqueline Thiesse Namati, Concord, Massachusetts

Whether it’s your kids, your partner or your favorite furry friend, start your day with a good ol’ fashioned cuddle. Not only can it reduce stress and lower blood pressure, it feels pretty good, too. And for Baha’i prayers set to music, check out Devon Gundry’s Refrenergy.

“I wake up at 5 a.m. so that I can slowly ease into my day. I start with 10 minutes of foam rolling before packing my bag and heading to gym class at 6 a.m. Then it’s typically a spin class at SoulCycle, followed by strength training at Barry’s Bootcamp. These morning hours (all three of them) are critical in helping me stay focused throughout the course of my day.” – Ali Martillotta, New York, NY

If you can get motivated for a morning workout, there are plenty of benefits. Not only will you give your metabolism a boost, but you’ll also up your endorphins, which may set you up for good vibes for the rest of the day.

“I spend at least five minutes stretching every morning. It reminds me that I exist in corporeal form and it prepares me for my commute. If you don’t know, LA traffic is world renowned for being efficient and stress-free. (Okay, if you believe that, please send me your bank and Social Security info and I promise to make you a millionaire).” – Paul Hamlet, Los Angeles, California

Yes, traffic can wreak havoc on your morning mojo. So, to fight the bumper-to-bumper blues, start your day slowly and give your body what it needs before jumping in the car.

“I wake up at 6:30 a.m. and talk to my husband while he gets ready to leave at 7 a.m. Our conversation is never about anything major, just plans for the day, the weather, or something interesting we may have read the night before. It eases me into my morning. If it’s nice enough outside (only half the year, really) I’ll also go for a walk along the lakeshore trail.” – Annie Boye, Chicago, Illinois

Chatting with your partner in the morning—even if it is only about the weather forecast—can help you connect while your minds are fresh, as opposed to saving all your communication for the end of the day when you’re more likely to be exhausted.

“Every morning I get up around sunrise and walk up and down the beach with my bare feet in the sand and water. This makes me feel connected, grounded, and it allows me to plan the day and make any important decisions with clarity and calmness.” – Aryan Rashed, Miami, Florida

If you’re not fortunate enough to live by the beach, substitute an ocean stroll for a forest walk, or even a quick amble through a local park—anything to get a daily dose of nature.

“The thing that’s a constant in my mornings is breakfast with my partner and two young kids. We either have fried, fresh chicken eggs and corn tortillas, or a hearty mush/porridge that’s equal parts amaranth, millet, and quinoa, plus a pat of butter, coconut flakes, dried mulberries and chia seeds. It’s been a few years, and we haven’t gotten sick of it yet!” – Lauren Rochell, Austin, Texas

Breakfast-eaters often have lower rates of heart disease, and they’re less likely to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Plus, gathering around the kitchen table before work or school is another opportunity for family bonding. So, find the pancakes or porridge that work for you and pay tribute to the most important meal of the day.

“It’s pretty standard for me to blast upbeat music when I’m getting ready for work in the morning, particularly when I’m in the shower and doing my hair and makeup. My go-to Pandora stations these days are Shakira Radio and Milky Chance Radio. On days when I need to be a little more Zen, I trade those stations for Bonobo Radio or classical music.” – Roxana Rezai, San Francisco, California

The right tunes can help reduce AM anxiety and stress, plus it can help get you moving if you do decide to hit the gym right off the bat. Researchers have even suggested that music can ward off illness by upping levels of IgA—an antibody that’s critical in helping our immune systems fight disease.

Getting off on the right foot can positively impact your entire day. Start your day with a serving of Tropicana for a morning ritual that will help bring out your best you!

Uber Taps Eric Holder To Lead Investigation Into Sexual Harassment Claims

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will lead Uber’s investigation into sexual harassment claims made by an ex-employee, the company told its workforce on Monday.

In an email obtained by Reuters, The Guardian and other news organizations, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick told his employees that Holder will lead an “independent review” of the claims that former Uber engineer Susan Fowler made in her now-viral blog post, as well as broader diversity issues at the company.

“It is my number one priority that we come through this a better organization where we live our values and fight for and support those who experience injustice,” Kalanick wrote in the memo, according to The Guardian.

Fowler, who wrote about the year she spent working at the ride-hailing company, described an office culture that permitted rampant sexual harassment and gender discrimination, and a human resources department that did little to protect her and her female colleagues.

At one point, Fowler says, she was told she was on “thin ice” and in risk of being fired if she continued to report cases to HR.

“I reported his threat immediately after the meeting to both HR and to the CTO: they both admitted that this was illegal, but none of them did anything,” Fowler wrote.

Holder will be joined by his colleague Tammy Albarran, who is also a partner at the law firm Covington & Burling. Kalanick also said Uber board member Arianna Huffington, as well as the company’s human resources chief, Liane Hornsey, and the company’s associate general counsel, Angela Padilla, will help conduct the internal review.

After reading Fowler’s blog, Kalanick responded in a statement to HuffPost, “What she describes is abhorrent and against everything Uber stands for and believes in.”

In his memo to employees, the Uber CEO said that women make up 15 percent of the company’s employees. Fowler said that just 3 percent of the engineers were women at the time she left.

How Living With IBD Helped Me Discover My Superpowers

If you had x-ray vision, what would you do with it? Look through walls and spy on your co-workers? Find your dog’s lost ball under the couch, or lazily peek through your fridge to see if you’re almost out of your favorite Greek yogurt? Or maybe, like a traditional superhero, you would wander your town looking for clues behind the doors that no one can enter, and use your powers for the greater good.

What if your x-ray vision allowed you to not just see through things, but to see the invisible? I was given that super power, in a way, because of my life with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

As many patients know all too well, the difficulties associated with IBD are often invisible to others. It’s the hours when no one is around as you traverse from your couch to your bathroom; it’s the pain and fatigue that lurk in your body; it’s disappearing from your friends as you drive to the doctor’s office; and it’s the emotional pain too – the loneliness and isolation – when it feels like no one understands your experience.

My journey with IBD dominated my college experience. I realized, during that time, that one of the most important tools I needed was support and understanding. It hit me one time, on a particularly symptom-ravaged day, that no one I knew understood my experience and my pain. No one knew what it was like to be me, living with a chronic disease. I needed those around me to use their x-ray vision and see the invisible illness inside of my body and mind.

Slowly, I gained the power and confidence to allow people to see aspects of my disease and the effects they had on my life. I learned to be more open and vulnerable, allowing those around me to know about the painful and embarrassing aspects of my IBD experience. I learned to tell them about my daily life, my struggles, and how my disease changed me, sometimes for the better. To my surprise, letting people see the reality of my disease didn’t drive them away, and the more I learned to tell my story and make it visible, the more I built a strong support system around myself.

The importance of telling my story while also being sensitive to the stories of those around me was not lost. I began to pay closer attention to small details of everyone’s experiences. I paid attention when they showed signs of tiredness or sadness, or even those of strength and pride. I looked through people’s exteriors and saw them not just for what was immediately visible, but as a complex person who lives a complex life, potentially with a disease like I do.

I began asking others about their experiences, what they want others to know about their lives, and what they most need in terms of support. I wanted to know what they want to make visible to others. I grew my x-ray vision of empathy and awareness, because I know just how much it can matter.

This is the superpower that IBD gave me and now I work to give everyone around me the same superpower. Together, we can influence the world and that’s not something in an alternate universe. It’s something we already have the power to do.

To help reveal the true impact of IBD and highlight the strength and resilience of the patient community, Takeda launched IBD Unmasked, a global awareness initiative launched in the U.S. in partnership with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) and IBD community members. Join our community at IBDunmasked.com and together we can unmask the truth behind this incessant villain.

Megan has ulcerative colitis (UC) and is one of the co-founders of The Great Bowel Movement (GBM), which aims to empower those with IBD “to embrace their disease, be proud of their experience, and spread awareness throughout their communities.” Megan is very interested in athletics and fitness, and takes on IBD with a mix of strength and humor. Building on her experiences facing even the toughest circumstances, Megan has worked to provide a voice to others, becoming a fearless force in the IBD community. She is a veteran participant of CCFA’s Team Challenge and Camp Oasis.

Here We Go Again: Russia Gets Swatted Over Cyberattacks In Another Election

Just months after the U.S. intelligence community determined that the Russian government was behind cyberattacks during the American presidential campaign, the same thing appears to be happening in France.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault lashed Russia for suspected hacks in the country, calling them “unacceptable.”

“This form of interference in French democratic life is unacceptable and I denounce it,” he said in an interview that appeared Sunday in Journal du Dimanche.

Ayrault earlier told parliament: “After what happened in the United States, it is our responsibility to take all steps necessary to ensure that the integrity of our democratic process is fully respected.”

Aggressive election interference appears to be the latest strategy of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s drive to impose his will across borders.

Officials from the Netherlands fear that their country was the target of a fake information campaign last year to sway a vote on a referendum. A so-called Ukrainian team helped convince the Dutch to reject a European Union trade pact with the country, the New York Times reported. But it turned out the team was actually Russian.

Dutch elections are coming up in March, and officials say hackers linked to the Kremlin have tried repeatedly to break into government web sites. Votes are going to be tallied by hand to avoid possible tampering of voting machines, according to the Times. Now the Germans are also worried about what the Russians might try in their upcoming elections.

Norway also revealed last month that hackers linked to Russia had attacked government ministry sites and the emails of the Labour Party in an operation strikingly similar to what happened in the U.S.

Ayrault said it was obvious the Russians are targeting French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron, a staunch supporter of the European Union — though there is no hard evidence to prove it. Macron’s campaign website and emails have been hit by hackers over the past month, reports Agence France Presse. He has been the only candidate hit by cyberattacks. A fake news campaign linked to Russia has also been launched against him.

His rivals for the French presidency are Marine Le Pen of the extreme-right National Front and conservative Republican candidate Francois Fillon, who supports closer ties to the Kremlin.

In the U.S. campaign the CIA concluded that Russian distribution of fake news on the Internet and hacks of Democratic emails was an attempt to sway the U.S. election to Donald Trump.

WATCH: “Finding” the Time to Do Things

Do you have things you’d like to do, but keep putting them off until you “find the time”…? And in today’s busy world, where we are constantly bombarded with different things to give our attention to, how often does that strategy actually work out? Here’s a video to help you stop kidding yourself, and start enhancing your chances of success.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

9 Signs You’re Dealing With An Emotional Manipulator

We all know what it feels like to be emotionally manipulated. It can be extremely effective, which is why some unscrupulous individuals do it so much.

A few years ago, Facebook, in conjunction with researchers from Cornell and the University of California, conducted an experiment in which they intentionally played with the emotions of 689,000 users by manipulating their feeds so that some users only saw negative stories while others only saw positive stories. Sure enough, when these people posted their own updates, they were greatly influenced by the mood of the posts they’d been shown.

Facebook caught a lot of flak over the experiment, primarily because none of the “participants” gave their consent to join the study. Perhaps more frightening than Facebook’s faux pas was just how easily people’s emotions were manipulated. After all, if Facebook can manipulate your emotions just by tweaking your newsfeed, imagine how much easier this is for a real, live person who knows your weaknesses and triggers. A skilled emotional manipulator can destroy your self-esteem and even make you question your sanity.

It’s precisely because emotional manipulation can be so destructive that it’s important for you to recognize it in your own life. It’s not as easy as you might think, because emotional manipulators are typically very skillful. They start out with subtle manipulation and raise the stakes over time, so slowly that you don’t even realize it’s happening. Fortunately, emotional manipulators are easy enough to spot if you know what to look for.

1. They undermine your faith in your grasp of reality. Emotional manipulators are incredibly skilled liars. They insist an incident didn’t happen when it did, and they insist they did or said something when they didn’t. The trouble is they’re so good at it that you end up questioning your own sanity. To insist that whatever caused the problem is a figment of your imagination is an extremely powerful way of getting out of trouble.

2. Their actions don’t match their words. Emotional manipulators will tell you what you want to hear, but their actions are another story. They pledge their support, but, when it comes time to follow through, they act as though your requests are entirely unreasonable. They tell you how lucky they are to know you, and then act as though you’re a burden. This is just another way of undermining your belief in your own sanity. They make you question reality as you see it and mold your perception according to what is convenient to them.

3. They are experts at doling out guilt. Emotional manipulators are masters at leveraging your guilt to their advantage. If you bring up something that’s bothering you, they make you feel guilty for mentioning it. If you don’t, they make you feel guilty for keeping it to yourself and stewing on it. When you’re dealing with emotional manipulators, whatever you do is wrong, and, no matter what problems the two of you are having, they’re your fault.

4. They claim the role of the victim. When it comes to emotional manipulators, nothing is ever their fault. No matter what they do—or fail to do —it’s someone else’s fault. Someone else made them do it—and, usually, it’s you. If you get mad or upset, it’s your fault for having unreasonable expectations; if they get mad, it’s your fault for upsetting them. Emotional manipulators don’t take accountability for anything.

5. They are too much, too soon. Whether it’s a personal relationship or a business relationship, emotional manipulators always seem to skip a few steps. They share too much too soon—and expect the same from you. They portray vulnerability and sensitivity, but it’s a ruse. The charade is intended to make you feel “special” for being let into their inner circle, but it’s also intended to make you feel not just sorry for them but also responsible for their feelings.

6. They are an emotional black hole. Whatever emotional manipulators are feeling, they’re geniuses at sucking everyone around them into those emotions. If they’re in a bad mood, everyone around them knows it. But that’s not the worst part: they’re so skillful that, not only is everyone aware of their mood, they feel it too. This creates a tendency for people to feel responsible for the manipulator’s moods and obliged to fix them.

7. They eagerly agree to helpand maybe even volunteerthen act like a martyr. An initial eagerness to help swiftly morphs into sighs, groans, and suggestions that whatever they agreed to do is a huge burden. And, if you shine a spotlight on that reluctance, they’ll turn it around on you, assuring you that, of course, they want to help and that you’re just being paranoid. The goal? To make you feel guilty, indebted, and maybe even crazy.

8. They always one-up you. No matter what problems you may have, emotional manipulators have it worse. They undermine the legitimacy of your complaints by reminding you that their problems are more serious. The message? You have no reason to complain, so shut the heck up.

9. They know all your buttons and don’t hesitate to push them. Emotional manipulators know your weak spots, and they’re quick to use that knowledge against you. If you’re insecure about your weight, they comment on what you eat or the way your clothes fit; if you’re worried about an upcoming presentation, they point out how intimidating and judgmental the attendees are. Their awareness of your emotions is off the charts, but they use it to manipulate you, not to make you feel better.

Overcoming Manipulation

Emotional manipulators drive you crazy because their behavior is so irrational. Make no mistake about it—their behavior truly goes against reason, so why do you allow yourself to respond to them emotionally and get sucked into the mix?

The more irrational and off-base someone is, the easier it should be for you to remove yourself from their traps. Quit trying to beat them at their own game. Distance yourself from them emotionally, and approach your interactions with them like they’re a science project (or you’re their shrink if you prefer that analogy). You don’t need to respond to the emotional chaos—only the facts.

Maintaining an emotional distance requires awareness. You can’t stop someone from pushing your buttons if you don’t recognize when it’s happening. Sometimes you’ll find yourself in situations where you’ll need to regroup and choose the best way forward. This is fine, and you shouldn’t be afraid to buy yourself some time to do so.

Most people feel as though because they work or live with someone, they have no way to control the chaos. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Once you’ve identified a manipulator, you’ll begin to find their behavior more predictable and easier to understand. This will equip you to think rationally about when and where you have to put up with them and when and where you don’t. You can establish boundaries, but you’ll have to do so consciously and proactively. If you let things happen naturally, you’re bound to find yourself constantly embroiled in difficult conversations. If you set boundaries and decide when and where you’ll engage a difficult person, you can control much of the chaos. The only trick is to stick to your guns and keep boundaries in place when the person tries to cross them, which they will.

Bringing It All Together

Emotional manipulators can undermine your sense of who you are and even make you doubt your own sanity. Remember: nobody can manipulate you without your consent and cooperation.

Steve Bannon’s Cardinal Pal Denies Guam Post Is Pope Punishment

An arch-conservative American cardinal has denied that his sudden posting to Guam in the wake of a Vatican fake news attack on Pope Francis is a punishment from the liberal pontiff.

The Vatican dispatched Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke to Guam to be the judge at a trial there of an archbishop who was removed from office last year after several allegations of child sex abuse. Burke insisted the trial will likely be finished by the summer and told Mediaset in Italy that the posting was normal and not a punishment from the pope, though the two men have clashed in the past.

Burke was named in a recent New York Times article as a friend of Donald Trump’s top aide Steve Bannon. They’re both members of an emboldened Catholic power base — self-described “rad trads,” or radical traditionalists — pushing for a stricter interpretation of Church teachings, according to the Times. The pope, on the other hand, is one of the more liberal pontiffs of the last several decades. He preaches compassion, has encouraged protesting to achieve justice, is concerned about climate change and has attacked policies of the Trump administration without mentioning the president’s name.

Burke recently angered the pope after reportedly demanding the suspension of a leader of a traditionally conservative Catholic charity organization, the Knights of Malta, for arranging the distribution of free condoms in Myanmar. Francis also was recently the target of a fake publication designed by conservatives to look like the official Vatican newspaper. A phony interview in the paper mocked his liberal views

Burke’s Guam trial is already experiencing trouble. An altar boy who had accused the local archbishop of sex abuse has refused to take the stand, the Catholic News Agency reported.

His lawyer complained that the boy would be intimidated at the hearing because he would be surrounded and questioned by Catholic priests acting as the defense attorney, the prosecutor and the judge — yet the boy’s lawyer would not be allowed to be present to advise his client.

Advocates for victims of priest sex abuse complained about the choice of Burke for the case. They said the conservative cardinal has in other cases “consistently defended accused clergy and played hardball with victims,” Anne Barrett Doyle, a co-director of BishopAccountability.org told the Pacific Daily News.

This Is What Obamacare’s Critics Won’t Admit Or Simply Don’t Understand

THOUSAND OAKS, California ― Maryann Hammers is likely to die from ovarian cancer someday. But she hopes someday won’t come anytime soon.

Hammers, 61, received the diagnosis in late 2013, and doctors told her that it was stage 3-C, which meant that she could live for many years with the right treatment and a little luck. So far, she’s had both. She’s in remission for the second time, and her last course of chemotherapy ended a year and a half ago. But recent blood tests detected elevated levels of a protein associated with tumors, she explained when we met a few weeks ago. “Maybe it’s a fluke,” she said. “I hope so. I kinda feel like the clock is ticking.”

If the cancer is back, Hammers said, she may need surgery similar to her two previous operations — “gigantic surgeries, gutted like a fish and hospitalized for many days.” Chemotherapy would likely come next, plus medication, hospitalization, and home care. But Hammers considers herself lucky because she’s been able to get treatment at City of Hope, a highly respected Southern California cancer research and treatment center, and luckier still that she’s been able to pay for the treatment with insurance — an Anthem Blue Cross policy she bought through Covered California, the exchange her state created under the Affordable Care Act.

To hear President Donald Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans tell it, Obamacare has been a disaster, even for those who obtained coverage through the law. Hammers has a very different perspective. She’s a freelance writer and editor, which means she has no employer-provided insurance. In the old days, if she’d gone shopping for a policy with her cancer diagnosis, she would have struggled to find a carrier willing to sell her one.

I’m terrified. … Do you know how easy it is to use a million dollars when you’re getting cancer treatment?
Maryann Hammers, Thousand Oaks, California

And it’s not just the pre-existing condition guarantee, which even critics like Trump say they support, that Hammers has found so valuable. The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover a wide range of services and treatments — which, in her case, has included multiple shots of Neulasta, a medication that boosts white blood cell counts and typically costs several thousand dollars per injection. The law also prohibits annual or lifetime limits on benefits, which, as a long-term cancer patient, she would be a prime candidate to exceed.

Policies with such robust coverage inevitably cost thousands of dollars a year, more than Hammers could afford on her own — particularly since battling the disease has cut into her work hours. But the law’s generous tax credits discount the premiums and help with the out-of-pocket costs, too. “Without the Affordable Care Act, I honestly do not know what I would have done,” she said.

The coverage Hammers has today still isn’t as good as what she had years ago, when she worked for a company that provided benefits. But it’s better than what she had in the years right before the cancer diagnosis, when she was buying insurance on her own. The latter plan covered fewer services and came with out-of-pocket costs high enough to discourage her from getting checkups. Obamacare’s introduction of free preventive screenings led her to schedule a long-overdue colonoscopy. During routine preparation for that procedure, a physician first felt a lump in her abdomen.

Sometimes Hammers wonders whether, with less sporadic doctor visits, the cancer might have been caught a little sooner. “But I couldn’t afford a fat doctor’s bill. And I thought I was super healthy.”

These days, something else looms even larger in her mind — the possibility that Trump and the Republican Congress will repeal the health care law without an adequate replacement, or maybe with no replacement at all.

“I’m terrified — isn’t that crazy?” Hammers said. “My biggest source of stress right now isn’t the fact that I have incurable cancer. It’s the prospect of losing my insurance.”

What American Health Care Used To Look Like

To appreciate the significance of stories like Hammers’ and what they say about the Affordable Care Act, it helps to remember what used to happen to people like her before the law took effect. By 2009, when President Barack Obama took office, roughly 1 in 6 Americans had no health care insurance, and even the insured could still face crippling medical bills. As a reporter covering health care during those years, I met these people. Some of their stories stand out, even now, because they capture the old system at its callous, capricious worst.

Gary Rotzler, a quality engineer at a defense contractor in upstate New York, lost his family coverage in the early 1990s when he lost his job. He ended up uninsured for two years, while he juggled stints as an independent contractor. His wife, Betsy, made do without doctor visits even after she started feeling some strange pains. By the time she got a checkup, she had advanced breast cancer. Desperate efforts at treatment failed. After she died, Gary, a father of three, had to declare bankruptcy because of all the unpaid medical bills.

Jacqueline Ruess, a widow in south Florida, thought she was insured. But then she needed expensive tests when her physicians suspected she had cancer. Although the tests were negative, the insurer refused to pay the bills because, it said, a brief episode of a routine gynecological problem in her past qualified as a pre-existing condition.

Tony Montenegro, an immigrant from El Salvador living in Los Angeles, was uninsured and working as a security guard, until untreated diabetes left him legally blind.

Marijon Binder, an impoverished former nun in Chicago, was sued by a Catholic hospital over medical expenses she couldn’t pay.

And Russ Doren, a schoolteacher in a Denver suburb, believed he had good insurance until the bills for his wife’s inpatient treatment at a psychiatric hospital hit the limit for mental health coverage. The hospital released her, despite worries that she was not ready. A few days later, she took her own life.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was an effort to address these kinds of problems — to carry on the crusade for universal coverage that Harry Truman had launched some 60 years before. But precisely because Obama and his allies were determined to succeed where predecessors had failed, they made a series of concessions that necessarily limited the law’s ambition.

They expanded Medicaid and regulated private insurance rather than start a whole new government-run program. They dialed back demands for lower prices from drugmakers, hospitals and other health care industries. And they agreed to tight budget constraints for the program as a whole, rather than risk a revolt among more conservative Democrats. These decisions meant that health insurance would ultimately be more expensive and the new system’s financial assistance would be less generous.

Still, projections showed that the law would bring coverage to millions while giving policymakers tools they could use to reduce medical costs over time. When the Senate passed its version of the legislation in December 2009, then-Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) described the program as a “starter home” with a solid foundation and room for expansion.

Where Obamacare Failed And Where It Succeeded

Seven years later, Trump and the Affordable Care Act’s other critics insist that the program has been a boondoggle — that the Obamacare starter home needs demolition. Some of their objections are philosophical, and some, like the persistent belief that the law set up “death panels,” are fantastical. But others focus on the law’s actual consequences.

High on that list of consequences are the higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs that some people face. The new rules, like coverage of pre-existing conditions, have made policies more expensive, and Obamacare’s financial aid frequently doesn’t offset the increases. A “rate shock” wave hit suddenly in the fall of 2013, when insurers unveiled their newly upgraded plans and in many cases canceled old ones — infuriating customers who remembered Obama’s promise that “if you like your plan, you can keep it,” while alienating even some of those sympathetic to what Obama and the Democrats were trying to do.

I’ve interviewed plenty of these people, too. A few weeks ago, I spoke with Faisuly Scheurer, a real estate agent from Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She and her husband, who works in the restaurant business, were excited about the health care law because they’d struggled to find decent, affordable insurance. They make about $ 60,000 a year, before taxes, with two kids and college tuition looming in the not-distant future, she said.

In late 2013, they checked out their options and learned that, after tax credits, coverage would cost $ 360 a month. Scheurer said she remembers thinking, “OK, that is really tight. But if the benefits are good, we are going to have to skimp on other things to make it work.” Then she learned about the out-of-pocket costs, which could reach $ 13,000 over the course of a year depending on her family’s medical needs. “My disappointment was indescribable.”

The Scheurer family ultimately decided to remain uninsured. They’re not the only ones, and that has weakened the system as a whole. The people eschewing coverage tend to be relatively healthy, since they’re most willing to take the risk of no coverage. That’s created big problems for insurers, which need the premiums from healthy folks to offset the high medical bills of people with serious conditions.

Many insurers have reacted by raising premiums or pulling out of some places entirely, leaving dysfunctional markets in North Carolina and a handful of other states. Just this week, Humana, which had already scaled back its offerings, announced that it was pulling out of the Affordable Care Act exchanges altogether. At least for the moment, 16 counties in Tennessee don’t have a single insurer committed to offering coverage in 2018.

Trump, Ryan and other Republicans pounced on the Humana news, citing it as more proof of a “failed system” and the need for repeal. That’s pretty typical of how the political conversation about the Affordable Care Act has proceeded for the last seven years. The focus is on everything that’s gone wrong with Obamacare, with scant attention to what’s gone right.

And yet the list of what’s gone right is long.

  • In states like California and Michigan, the newly regulated markets appear to be working as the law’s architects intended, except for some rural areas that insurers have never served that well. Middle-class people in those states have better, more affordable options.

  • It looks like more insurers are figuring out how to make their products work and how to successfully compete for business. Customers have turned out to be more price-sensitive than insurers originally anticipated. In general, the carriers that struggle are large national companies without much experience selling directly to consumers, rather than through employers.

  • Last year’s big premium increases followed two years in which average premiums were far below projections, a sign that carriers simply started their pricing too low. Even now, on average, the premiums people pay for exchange insurance are on a par with, or even a bit cheaper than, equivalent employer policies — and that’s before the tax credits.

  • The majority of people who are buying insurance on their own or get their coverage through Medicaid are satisfied with it, according to separate surveys by the Commonwealth Fund and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. The level of satisfaction with the new coverage still trails that involving employer-provided insurance, and it has declined over time. But it’s clearly in positive territory

And then there’s the fact that the number of people without health insurance is the lowest that government or private surveys have ever recorded. When confronted with questions about the people who gained coverage because of the law, Republicans often say something about sparing those people from disruption ― and then argue that even those who obtained insurance through the law are suffering and no better off. This claim is wildly inconsistent with the experience of people like Maryann Hammers ― and, more important, it’s wildly inconsistent with the best available research.

People are struggling less with medical bills, have easier access to primary care and medication, and report that they’re in better health, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015. The number of people forgoing care because of costs or being “very worried” about paying for a catastrophic medical bill dropped substantially among the newly insured, Kaiser Foundation researchers found last year when they focused on people in California.

A bunch of other studies have turned up similar evidence, All of them concur with a landmark report on the effects of Massachusetts’ 2006 insurance expansion, which was a prototype for the national legislation. Residents of that state experienced better health outcomes and less financial stress, according to the study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

“Though it’s had no shortage of controversies and stumbles, there’s really no denying that the ACA has created historic gains in insurance coverage,” said Larry Levitt, a senior vice president at the Kaiser Foundation. “With better coverage that has fewer holes, access to health care has improved and many have better protection from crushing medical bills.”

What Repeal Would Really Mean

Reasonable people can disagree about whether these achievements justify Obamacare’s costs, which include not only higher premiums for the young and healthy but also hefty new taxes on the wealthiest Americans. That’s a debate about values and priorities as much as facts.

What’s not in dispute, or shouldn’t be, is the stark choice on the political agenda right now.

Democratic lawmakers still argue for the principle that Truman laid out in 1948: “health security for all, regardless of residence, station, or race.” They think the Affordable Care Act means the U.S. is closer to that goal and that the next step should be to bolster the law ― by using government power to force down the price of drugs, hospital services and other forms of medical care, while providing more generous government assistance to people who still find premiums and out-of-pocket costs too onerous. Basically, they want people like Faisuly Scheurer to end up with the same security that people like Maryann Hammers already have.

Some Republicans talk as if they share these goals. Trump has probably been the most outspoken on this point, promising to deliver “great health care at lower cost” and vowing that “everybody would be covered.” But other Republicans reject the whole concept of health care as a right. Although it’s theoretically possible to draw up a conservative health plan that would improve access and affordability, these aren’t the kinds of plans that Republicans have in mind.

There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it.
Angela Eilers, Yorba Linda, California

Their schemes envision substantially less government spending on health care, which would mean lower taxes for the wealthy but also less financial assistance for everybody else. Republicans would make insurance cheaper, but only by allowing it to cover fewer services and saddling beneficiaries with even higher out-of-pocket costs. The result would be some mix of more exposure to medical bills and more people without coverage. If Republicans repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacing it ― a real possibility, given profound divisions within the GOP over how to craft a plan ― 32 million more people could go uninsured, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

That would mean real suffering, primarily among those Americans who benefit most from the law now ― the ones with serious medical problems, or too little income to pay for insurance on their own, or both.

Jay Stout, a 20-year-old in Wilmington, North Carolina, is one of those people. He was in good health until a head-on car collision nearly severed his arm and landed him in the hospital for more than a month. Surgeries and rehabilitation would have cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars that, as a community college student working part-time as a busboy, he could never have paid — if not for the Blue Cross plan that his mother had bought through the Affordable Care Act. When we spoke a few weeks ago, he told me the insurance has been “irreplaceable” and that losing it “would be totally devastating.”

Meenakshi Bewtra had never had a serious health problem until her first year at the University of Pennsylvania medical school, when she developed severe gastrointestinal problems — the kind that forced her into the hospital for two months and drove her to drop out of school. Her insurance lapsed, which meant that her GI issues became a pre-existing condition. She eventually found coverage and today she’s a professor of medicine at Penn, where she moonlights as an advocate for universal health insurance.

“For the first time, I truly understood what comprehensive health insurance meant,” Bewtra said, remembering what it was like to become fully covered. “I did not have to worry about how many times I saw a doctor, or how many lab tests I had to get, or having to ration out medications.”

Angela Eilers, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, isn’t worrying about her own health. It’s her daughter Myka who has a congenital heart condition called pulmonary stenosis, which makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood to the lungs. The little girl has required multiple surgeries and will need intensive medical treatment throughout her childhood.

In 2012, Angela’s husband, Todd, was laid off from his job at an investment firm. Since going without insurance was not an option, they took advantage of COBRA to stay on his old company’s health plan. It was expensive, and Eilers recalled panicking over the possibility they might not be able to pay the premiums. “I remember sitting at the table, thinking of plans. What would be our plan? One of them was … giving up our parents rights to my mom, because she has really good health insurance.”

Eventually her husband started his own consulting business, and that gave them the income to keep up with premiums until 2014 — when they were able to obtain coverage through the Affordable Care Act. Today they have a gold plan, one of the most generous available, for which they pay around $ 20,000 a year. Even though they make too much to qualify for financial assistance, they’re grateful for the coverage. Seven-year-old Myka has already run up more than a half-million dollars in medical bills. In the old days, before Obamacare, they would have worried about hitting their plan’s lifetime limit on benefits.

The family’s coverage has become more expensive over the years. They wish the price were lower, but they’re also not complaining about that. “I’m thankful that the letter was a premium hike, rather than ‘Sorry, we are not going to cover your daughter anymore,’” Angela Eilers said.

When she thinks about the possibility of Obamacare repeal, she wonders if Trump and the Republicans understand what that would really mean. “There’s a face to this law, there’s a face to people that are going to be affected by it,” Eilers said. “It’s not me, it’s not him, it’s her. She’s only 7. And through no fault of her own, why should she suffer? And she’s not the only one.”

Here’s What We Learned From Friday’s #DayofFacts

Museums and libraries are typically nonpartisan institutions, but even they can’t stay quiet in this political climate and amid the “fake news” buzz. On Friday, they took to Twitter to stand up for something that’s become a puzzling political talking point: Facts.

Using the hashtag #DayofFacts, scientists, historians and even encyclopedias filled Twitter feeds with all the facts that no one ― not a POTUS nor political pundit ― could deny.

The movement was launched by two museum educators in Virginia and D.C., and more than 280 institutions participated, according to The Washington Post.

“We’re using facts to illustrate truth about the present moment,” Alli Hartley, one of the founders, told the Post.

Tweeted facts varied from the mind-blowing (Earth is 4.5 billion years old) to the poignant (over half of the world’s refugees are children). Most tweets seemed to address political topics: civil rights, climate change, borders and immigration, and the free press.

The San Francisco Public Library was one of the hundreds of institutions that tweeted Friday. It participated to “remind our patrons and the world that libraries are a place that all people can come to and access trusted and curated information,” library spokeswoman Katherine Jardine told The Huffington Post.

However, Jardine said that promoting facts shouldn’t be considered a political movement because provable facts, unlike “alternative facts,” shouldn’t be up for debate.

“I think public libraries are here to encourage that notion,” she said.

Of the four #DayofFacts tweets shared by the San Francisco Public Library, two were about climate change and one included the tag #BlackLivesMatter.

So, what do we get when a horde of researchers, scientists and history buffs tweet in the fight against “alternative facts”?

Turns out, a whole lot of truth bombs about our country, its history, its communities and the health of the planet we all call home.

Lastly, not a fact, but some wonderful insight about what knowing more can achieve:

How to Embrace the Gift of Criticism

2017-02-14-1487094125-2445609-dontloseyourfire.jpg

This past October, I received the news from my literary agent that the novel I’d been laboring over and believed was finished, needed more work before she could take it out to market.

It was hard enough to accept this judgment, let alone share my disappointment with anyone–particularly my readers, in spite of the fact they’ve always remained remarkably loyal. Perhaps I was simply embarrassed to admit it. After all, I had made a few declarations that the manuscript was complete, and that I was on my way to finding a publisher.

The process of writing this book had already been somewhat painstaking, beginning back in October of 2015, when–after two years of writing–I received the advice of an established writer and editor: pitch the first 350 pages and begin again. After much contemplation, I decided to follow her suggestion.

That brings me to October 2016, a year later, when I found myself with 450 brand-new pages of completed manuscript. I sent it on to my agent, and this time she was the one to tell me that I had once again failed to reach my goal, although in an entirely different way this time around.

Initially, I couldn’t hear or process her evaluation: she felt that the novel should not be abandoned–but instead further revised. Significantly. Even though I had polished every page until my brain ached, I nevertheless needed to accept that I still had a lot of work to do. I trust my agent and value her experience, so I listened to all she had to say and resolved I would try to push myself through one last draft. This acquiescence, however, came with a steep emotional price tag.

THE NECESSARY EVIL OF CRITIQUE

Depression saturated the following days. One that was dark and deep, though I carried on with my life anyway. But, on a morning not so long afterward, as I brushed my teeth, the novel’s protagonist began to whisper in my ear. From her came a new idea. And then another. By the time five o’clock rolled around, I had scribbled down forty-one revisions I planned to make. And now, some four months after I’d submitted the manuscript to my agent originally, I am happy to say I’ve almost finished those numerous and significant changes. With great satisfaction, I can see how much I’ve improved and transformed the novel. I have to admit that, in so many ways, she was right.

I suppose the point in exposing my failures and regenerations in this writing process is to share with you the value of accepting criticism, enduring the agony of starting over, and learning to revise and adapt to changes in our plans–be they large or small–in order to achieve our dreams. Sometimes we have to let go of old ideas in order to reveal a new direction. In a novel, beginnings and endings change, as do titles, characters, points of view, scenes, and plot lines. The only constant is in knowing what you want to say–rather than knowing how you want to say it.

Going back to the starting gate in order to get to the finish line can be a harsh reality that requires both perseverance and fortitude–two qualities every writer must possess in abundance.

YOU ARE ALL THAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

My mother, the late poet, Anne Sexton, wore a medallion around her neck–which I inherited and still wear–that is inscribed with the Latin phrase: “Illegitimi Non Carborundum.” This means, in rough English (if you will excuse the expletive): “Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down.” I reminded myself of that sentiment as I soldiered on with countless revisions and rewrites. While no specific person was “grinding me down” back in October, it did feel, at the time, as if life itself was trying to squash my desire to see this through.

But now, sitting here at my computer in February, I no longer feel overwhelmed with self-doubt and defeat. Once again, I have regained a firm grasp of where my novel is going and how I’m going to get it to the finish line. And this time I’m certain that no one is going to get in my way. Not even myself.

Of course, there are no guarantees in the publishing industry. My agent may still feel uncertain about the novel despite all the hard work I’ve put into it since her last critique. Or, perhaps her response will be the opposite, and she’ll now see it as a blockbuster destined for the best-seller lists. But who’s to say my publisher will agree. The difficult work of four years could be stashed in a banker’s box, consigned to my storage shed, lined up side by side with the discarded drafts of other work and years of old tax returns. This is the risk I accept as one who makes her living as a writer.

Many of us go through similar experiences: a chef dumps a batch of curdled hollandaise sauce, and begins to whip up a new one; a surfer wipes out, and has to paddle in a hurry to catch the next wave; brothers and sisters, or parents and children, sit down together to work out a disagreement and strengthen their emotional bond.

The ability to listen to criticism, and to begin again, is a gift. And it can spark one of life’s most important challenges. If such insights should come to you–be open and take them to heart. It is absolutely possible to improve on a part of your life that is closest to your soul, be it in an intimate relationship or in the work-a-day world, so long as you allow it. Give starting over a chance, and discover the rewards you can reap.

Doctors Have Been Treating Lower Back Pain All Wrong

When Julie Price threw out her back for the second time in December, she knew she needed help.

“It was immobilizing and intense,” Price, a 37-year-old New York City-based accountant, told The Huffington Post.

Price, a former athlete, felt she had lost a lot of strength after two pregnancies. She also has flat feet, alignment issues and “bad knees,” so she realized she couldn’t take care of everything alone.

Although the pain started to lessen on its own, Price went to see Allen Chen, director of physiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spine Hospital, who specializes in treating spine injuries.

Chen, after ruling out structural problems with her spine, prescribed physical therapy once a week and home exercises. She doesn’t have any pain now, and she feels stronger, not just in her back but also in her core and legs, she said.

“Last week I was able to squat without anything hurting, which I never thought would happen,” she said. The physical therapy “has made a world of difference.”

The American College of Physicians, in new guidelines released this week, says a lot more patients should receive the type of treatment Chen prescribed for Price.

Doctors need to educate their patients that lower back pain is like a common cold ― unpleasant but hard to treat and likely to go away on its own. And chances are painkillers won’t do much to help.

“Low back pain is very common, and most [of it] improves over time regardless of treatment,” Nitin Damle, president of the American College of Physicians and a practicing internist, told HuffPost.

That’s a significant task considering that estimates suggest up to a fourth of all adults in the U.S. have had some back pain for at least one day in the past three months. It’s one of the most common reasons Americans go to a doctor.

The new guidelines: Don’t even bother with Tylenol

The new ACP guidelines recommend non-drug treatments, such as massage, yoga, tai chi and acupuncture, as the first line of defense against back pain. Only if those are not effective, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs, like aspirin and ibuprofen) should be used. Then, if those are ineffective, prescription drugs can be tried.

Another significant change to the guidelines is that acetaminophens (such as Tylenol and the combination drugs Excedrin and Sudafed) should not be used at all for back pain, since recent evidence shows that those over-the-counter painkillers do not actually help back pain.

The guidelines also recommend that doctors prescribe opioids only as a last resort, after other drug and non-drug therapies did not work, and after the doctor has explained the risks and benefits to the patient.

Overuse of over-the-counter painkillers, common among people with lower back pain, can lead to health risks, including heart and gastrointestinal problems. And the serious risks associated with opioid misuse ― including addiction, overdose and death ― have led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue its own guidelines for reducing prescription opioid use across all medical disciplines.

A big benefit of the new guidelines is that they will help patients avoid the risks associated with NSAIDs, Tylenol and, most significantly, opioids, Chen said. Many of the recommended non-drug therapies included in the guidelines ― yoga, tai chi, massage, heat and acupuncture therapy, among others ― are very low risk, he added.

It’s also important to note that the guidelines apply only to low back pain that stays in the back (not the kind that radiates down the leg or to other areas).

Massage, yoga, acupuncture first

“There’s been a push over the past few years in my practice and in many others to push away from medications ― particularly opioids,” Chen told HuffPost in a phone interview.

Previous treatment guidelines for low back pain from 2007 had recommended NSAIDs be used along with a non-drug treatment. “But I think the focus on non-pharmacological treatments for low back pain, opposed to medications ― particularly opioids ― is long overdue,” Chen said.

(ACP considers any guidelines out of date after five years and subsequently subject to review.)

Accessible alternative therapy is more important than ever

The guidelines themselves do not make recommendations for what treatments insurance companies should cover ― and just because the guidelines recommend a certain treatment does not mean your policy will cover it.

“Those may end up being out-of-pocket costs,” Chen said.

Plus, not all of the treatments in the guidelines are even available to all patients depending on where they live. For example, estimates suggest that in the U.S. there will be shortages of physical therapists in as many as 48 states by 2030 (based on current trends in needs for physical therapy and projected numbers of therapists).

For Price, getting to physical therapy once a week is accessible and is covered by her employer’s health insurance. But there are limits on how many sessions the plan will cover, she said.

“It does factor into my thoughts of how long do I need to continue” the therapy, she said.

But she’s more than happy that she’s pain-free without drugs. She did take a few doses of Aleve or Advil when her pain first started, but in general she tries to avoid medication, she said.

“The goal now is to get [my back] strong ― and better aligned ― so I don’t throw it out again.”

“I knew losing the strength I used to have before kids was most likely the biggest issue ― and that learning how to get that done right and fit it back into my new mommy lifestyle would be what I really needed,” Price said.

Trump’s Press Conference Had One Goal: Keep The Senate GOP In Line

WASHINGTON ― As scattershot and even crazy as it was, President Donald Trump’s first solo press conference Thursday had an organizing principle: to keep congressional Republicans from going rogue on the topic of Russia’s penetration of U.S. politics in general and Trump World in particular. The meandering weirdness may render it all useless, but at least he had a strategy.

Of all Trump’s challenges to D.C. rules, none is more unsettling and disorienting to the GOP power elite than this new idea that we should cozy up to Russia, looking the other way ― even cheering ― as Vladimir Putin mucks around in our elections.

Curmudgeon-in-chief John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, isn’t the only Republican on the Hill suspicious of what Trump and his team were and are up to with Russia. So is Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Richard Burr, chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and perhaps a score of other GOP senators of various rank and stripe.

Any or all of these chairmen ― with the enthusiastic support of their Democratic committee members ― could stage lengthy and, from Trump’s point of view, painful hearings.

Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, that exquisitely sensitive barometer of precisely what a hard-right message can and will sell, has expressed deep concern about Russian involvement.

The intelligence community is freaked out beyond measure ― the Russians, for the most part, have been enemies since the late 1940s, and with very good reason. But Trump perhaps can deal with them with a reign of terror internally, rooting out “leakers” and dissidents if he can find underlings willing to do it for him.

Vice Admiral Robert Harward told Trump after the press conference Thursday that he would not take the job of national security adviser, so he clearly wasn’t ready to be a willing underling.

But Congress is another matter, or so Trump has been advised by people who actually know the place. The House, with its oppressive rules, younger GOP members and large tea party Trumpian majority, is likely to remain docile and supportive for the most part.

But the Senate poses a risk: Many powerful GOP chairmen, older members who remember the Soviet Union, and former campaign foes, such a “Little Marco” Rubio of Florida, “Lyin’ Ted” Cruz of Texas and even the seemingly inconsequential campaign asterisk but actually very smart Sen. Lindsey Graham, are extremely wary and worried.

Rubio in particular has made his bones in foreign policy by being a steadfast foe of Putin and Russia. It was no coincidence that the president chose Wednesday night to dine with the senator from Florida and his wife, ostensibly to discuss Cuba.

How to hem the GOP Senate in? Dinners aside, by threatening to unleash upon the senators his base of populist, conservative and alt-right hunting dogs.

And the best way to do that is to call a press conference and tell the assembled “mainstream” media to their face that they are a desperately unpopular mass of liars who peddle “fake news” because they hate him and everything he and his base stand for.

Which is precisely what Trump did Thursday.

Just to make sure his base got the message, his political team had pre-written an email fundraising appeal that painted the press as his demonic enemy. It went out to his mailing list at the very moment he was finishing his 77-minute anti-press tirade.

And just to button things up, Rush Limbaugh quickly concluded on the air that the press conference was one of the best and most successful in the modern history of the republic.

So does anyone care about what former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn did or did not do for or with the Russians? How about former campaign chief Paul Manafort or anyone else? What about the new secretary of state, Rex Tillerson? What about the report that Flynn had lied to the FBI about what he had or hadn’t said to the Russian ambassador?

That’s all “fake news,” senators, and don’t you forget it. Who are you going to believe? The “fake press” or the Republican president of the United States, who won so many electoral votes? Focus on the leaks and the lying press, not what the president knew and when he knew it.

So, say what you want, Trump got that message ― and warning ― out.

Green Beret Shares How to Stay Motivated in Difficult Situations

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Ronald Fry, Speaker, Entrepreneur, Author of Hammerhead Six, on Quora:

What are the secrets to staying motivated during emotionally difficult times? This is a great question and one that others are more qualified to answer, but I will take a shot at it. Physical, mental, and emotionally difficult times are a normal part of life and can either break us or be used to forge our character. I have had emotionally difficult times as an individual, as a son, as a husband, father, and as a soldier. These are the times when I have had to lean on my God, my family, my friends, and focus on the big picture to get through.

In the last chapters of Hammerhead Six, I share a very personal, painful situation that occurred during our mission to the Pech Valley. I caused collateral damage that affected a local family, the village, and the Afghan soldiers on my camp. It was a situation that pushed my emotions and grief to the limit. I was humbled and accountable. I reflected on the best way to navigate the situation and continued to think about the big picture and why we were there in the first place. The desire to make things right and accomplish our mission forced me to focus on a solution instead of my own emotions. I chose to face it head on regardless of the consequences. The family and I were reconciled, the villagers appreciated that we acknowledged our mistake, and the mission continued successfully.

In retrospect, the personal growth that I attained from navigating the tragedy and not losing perspective was tremendous. I feel that my character, empathy, and emotional spectrum was stretched. It has become a bitter sweet memory for myself and others that experienced it with me.

Appeals Court Strikes Down Florida Law Banning Doctors From Asking Patients About Guns

Doctors in Florida can legally counsel patients about gun risks under a federal appeals court ruling that strikes down the state’s controversial “Docs vs. Glocks” gun law.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled Thursday that Florida’s National Rifle Association-backed law violated doctors’ First Amendment rights.

Read the full ruling below.

The Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act, signed in 2011 by Gov. Rick Scott (R), broadly prohibited doctors, emergency room workers and other health care professionals from asking patients whether they had guns, except in vaguely defined circumstances “relevant to the patient’s medical care or safety.”

The law said doctors “should refrain from unnecessarily harassing a patient about firearm ownership during an examination” and prohibited discrimination against firearms owners by refusing care or counseling against firearm ownership. Violators faced huge fines and revocation of their medical license.

The law was immediately challenged by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which sued the state on behalf of several doctors and more than 11,000 health care organizations.

Doctors routinely ask patients about potential hazards in the home, including drugs, chemicals, firearms and swimming pools. The American Medical Association for nearly 30 years has encouraged members to ask about guns in particular “as a part of childproofing the home and to educate patients to the dangers of firearms to children.”

The NRA and other gun advocates cited six anecdotes of patients who complained questions about firearms ownership invaded their privacy. In one instance, a pediatrician advised a mother who wouldn’t reveal whether she kept a gun in her home to find another doctor.

Florida’s gun laws are weaker than all but a handful of other states, according to rankings by the non-profit group Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Jonathan Lowy, co-counsel in the case and director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, praised the court’s decision.

Today’s ruling is an important victory for public safety and free speech rights, and a crushing defeat for the corporate gun lobby and the politicians who do its bidding,” Lowy said in a statement. “Politicians and special interest lobbies have no business standing between doctors and their patients, or keeping doctors from telling people the truth about the risks of guns or other products.”

The ruling can be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hope Indeed

Hope Indeed

Gerald Shenk has traveled to and lived in many difficult places. He goes to teach-and to spot people who act out of hope. When he began to feel fortified by what he discovered, even foolishly rich, he wrote what he had witnessed and heard for the rest of us. Hope Indeed! is his collection of stories of stunningly ordinary people behaving with extraordinary hope. Here are the stories of- Ned Wyse, a farmer/pastor in Michigan, chosen randomly for a violent beating by some neighborhood kids, and what he did about it. The Palestinian parents who gave their young murdered son’s organs to ill Jewish children. The Amish, who subverted the vicious violation of their innocent children in the Nickel Mines school by refusing to multiply the horror, and instead offered forgiveness and generosity. Jewish Cantor Michael Weisser and his family who took carry-out food to the white supremacists who had harassed them mercilessly. The German Lutheran pastor couple who offered their home to recently desposed and homeless Erich Honecker, who had ruthlessly ruled East Germany. Brother Ivo who kept bringing former Catholic and Muslim neighbors together as war escalated in Bosnia. Says Shenk, “Here are stories to rehearse if we want to become people who subvert vengeance with kindness.

Trevor Noah: Donald Trump May Bungle His Way To Middle East Peace

Trevor Noah is no fan of Donald Trump, but he thinks the president may actually solve the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.

Not intentionally, of course.

During a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, Trump suggested that he was OK with a one-state or a two-state solution, adding “I can live with either one. If Israel and the Palestinians are happy ― I’m happy with the one they like the best.”

On Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” Noah seemed perplexed at Trump’s boneheaded idea of diplomacy.

“Did this guy just tell us the problem like it was the solution?” he asked.

Then he realized Trump’s idiocy may be the key to solving a problem that has perplexed smarter, more experienced politicians.

“I wonder if his plan is to be such a bumbling fool that Israel and Palestine are going to get together in a room and be like, ‘I think we can both agree, this guy’s a fucking moron. We better solve this problem before this guy tries to help out.’”

Author Of The Shack Shares Five Tips For Dealing With Grief

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world..

Answer by Wm Paul Young, Author of New York Times Best Seller, The Shack, on Quora:

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? Thank you for the tenderness of this question. Here are a few, I hope helpful thoughts.

First, you are not alone, even though every one puts their best face forward on social media and even in human interactions, everyone knows about loss. There is a huge benefit in the element of faith, in a God who is good all the time and present to my losses.

Second, simplify. We get overwhelmed by the complexity of our losses, all the questions, and are tempted to start ‘future tripping’ – imagining a future that is dominated by loss and things never change. It is not real but seems real to us. Simplify and reduce the world to only today and stay inside the grace of this one day. Tomorrow you will get grace for whatever it actually holds and not what you have imagined.

Third, let people in. We are not designed to try and make our way alone through loss. Healing comes through community and relationship.

Fourth, be willing to let the loss go. This is a cost that some are not willing to pay. The loss becomes an identity and sometimes a prison that we begin to call a sanctuary.

Fifth, but (in light of the last suggestion), grieve and lament well. Throw the apples against the barn door with all your might and scream. Don’t suppress the presence of the wounds of loss. The way out is in and through.

Psychiatrist: Calling Donald Trump Mentally Ill Is An Insult To The Mentally Ill

A leading psychiatrist is pushing back after a group of industry professionals wrote a letter to The New York Times saying Donald Trump suffers from “grave emotional instability” that “makes him incapable of serving safely as president.”

But it’s not exactly a letter of support for the president.

Allen Frances, professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical College, told the newspaper that he wrote the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder ― and Trump doesn’t meet it.

“He may be a world-class narcissist, but this doesn’t make him mentally ill, because he does not suffer from the distress and impairment required to diagnose mental disorder,” he wrote.

He added:

“Mr. Trump causes severe distress rather than experiencing it and has been richly rewarded, rather than punished, for his grandiosity, self-absorption and lack of empathy. It is a stigmatizing insult to the mentally ill (who are mostly well behaved and well meaning) to be lumped with Mr. Trump (who is neither).”

Frances called on others in the industry to stop “psychiatric name-calling” and instead denounce Trump “for his ignorance, incompetence, impulsivity and pursuit of dictatorial powers.”

RuPaul Sends Michael Flynn Off With Two Perfect Words

Leave it to RuPaul

The world’s most famous drag queen had two words of advice for Michael Flynn after he resigned as President Donald Trump’s national security advisor late Monday.

Some of the responses were pretty brilliant too, especially this one:

RuPaul replied:

Then, for good measure, the host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on Logo added:

#MakeAmericaFierceAgain refers to a shoutout from “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver, who jokingly suggested on Sunday night that RuPaul run for president in 2020.

Why not?

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Love Takes Action: An Astrological View

For the past two years, my HuffPost blogs have focused on astrology and the myriad ways this ancient art is helpful and meaningful for life today. I was galvanized by HuffPost’s call for articles under the heading #LoveTakesAction. It is an antidote to the swirling hate around us in these fractious and difficult times and I am happy to contribute. Personally, and in my astrology practice, I am encouraging people to focus on what they can do without becoming overwhelmed by the fray, the double talk, and polarization we find all around us.

The first category HuffPost suggested is ways people take action to show and even mobilize love. Each astrological sign takes action in different ways and hewing to your own resonant talents and ability will maximize your effectiveness and keep your energy balanced.

Aries: Leads the campaign and marches. He is a natural warrior for justice.

Taurus: Raises money for organizations that matter and promotes concrete goals towards tolerance and peace.

Gemini: Disseminates real information that encourages people to think and take action.

Cancer: Nurtures those who come across their path whether in a soup kitchen, shelter, or random encounters.

Leo: Dramatizes with very public and heartfelt performances which portray the world you want to live in.

Virgo: Analyzes and categorizes information to discern the actual facts and communicates this information clearly.

2017-02-13-1487000444-7693330-zodiacsigns.jpg

Libra: Engages with tact and diplomacy in relationships, action and dialogue that try to balance love and hate while taking a middle course.

Scorpio: Transforms him or herself with radical, personal actions that serve as a model for passionate tolerance of all the forms love can take.

Sagittarius: Teaches through conversation and ideas that laughter and good humor can overcome obstacles.

Capricorn: Organizes business structures based on responsible solutions and ecological solutions for all people.

Aquarius: Creates a circle of friends and common-minded people who act together on social projects.

Pisces: Works with charitable and religious organizations that reach out with compassion to the neediest.

These suggestions are calls to love action for each sign. I hope they resonate with you and enhance your quest for a more harmonious world.

Here is this 2017 take away.

As founder of Less Cancer, it has become increasingly and exceedingly clear that the focus for Cancer Prevention must call immediate attention, an urgent 911, to our polluted and sometimes cancer-causing drinking water.

We as citizens need all resources shifted to this purpose— to guarantee that (at the very least) our drinking water is safe. Having safe, clean water speaks to the most basic of human needs. It’s a no-brainer. And yet, this isn’t fully understood or appreciated in its urgency.

It is precisely such concerns that called and continue to call on our work at Less Cancer.

The Less Cancer work started when it was founded in 2004 under the name of Next Generation Choices Foundation. At the time the idea of cancer prevention was thought to be more of a crap shoot than the evidenced based science that more mainstream audiences now understand. Leading experts globally agree that over 50% of all cancers are preventable. Today we know that the evidenced based science indicates the best way to end cancer is to prevent it. Our goal with Less Cancer is to reduce all incidences of cancer— particularly regarding populations with increasing rates of cancer.

Current leadership suggests that any protections that would come with the legislation may soon be an effort of the past and that non- government organizations must work harder and smarter to garner support for work that assures safe drinking water for all.

While individuals can help protect themselves with water testing and filters, organizations must fight for the policy and legislation that will help protect all Americans from cancers related to drinking water. This is a priority on which we all must be steadfastly focused.

Remember when you didn’t think twice about using a drinking fountain?

If we are to prioritize preventing any cancers, we must at the very least address the carcinogens in drinking water. This also requires we remain stealthily focused. It involves information, details, and action.

While policy, legislation or regulation may not be a solution for every problem —for the case of safe drinking water, it is the pressing priority.

Personal action is not enough. Leadership from a government, non-government organizations and private entities must do all they can to provide creative solutions for ensuring that there will be safe drinking water for all.

Sanders: Tea Party Was Funded By Kochs; Progressive ‘Uprising’ Driven By Passion

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) bridled at a suggestion that people protesting against the Trump administration are similar to the Tea Party demonstrators.

“It’s not a Tea Party because the Tea Party was essentially funded by the billionaire Koch brothers,” Sanders said during an interview Sunday on “Meet the Press.” “This is a spontaneous and grass-roots uprising of the American people.”

And he said protesters aren’t going away anytime soon. Sanders said demonstrations would continue to grow, particularly over the issues of the threatened repeal of the Afforadable Care Act in national rallies Feb. 25.

“I think you’re going to see people in conservative areas, in progressive areas, asking the Republicans: ‘What are you going to do when you throw 23 million people off of health insurance?’” Sanders said.

“’’How many of them are going to die? Are you really going to repeal the protection against preexisting conditions so that people who have cancer or heart disease will no longer be able to have health insurance? You going to throw kids off of their parents’ health insurance programs?’”

Some observers have noted that recent protests have seemed to mimic the Tea Party demonstrations beginning in 2009, though the numbers now are massively larger. But others say the Tea Party tactics to turn street protests into political power borrowed from the left and its far earlier protests against the Vietnam War.

In his “Meet the Press” appearance, Sanders also blasted Donald Trump’s vow to “drain the swamp” of corrupt old cronies in Washington.

“Well, guess who’s running the swamp right now?” he asked. “The same exact Wall Street guys from Goldman Sachs who were there in the past. “

Is It Angels Who Protect Social Entrepreneurs? Because Nobody Else Does…..

“Four corners to my bed

Four Angels round my head

One to watch, one to pray,

And two to take all fears away!”

When I was a child I would recite this rhyme before going to bed. Those were the days when we would sleep beneath the stars. Sometimes clouds and trees would take menacing shapes in the dark. I would shut my eyes tightly and think of the Angels protecting me and be comforted and drift into sleep.

Now it seems the Angels are back again.

Life was tough indeed when I took a conscious decision to establish Operation ASHA. My aim was clear- that of providing health solutions to the poorest of the poor. Suddenly life changed. From a successful doctor in an upscale fancy private hospital I became a foot soldier trudging long miles in shanty towns and villages. My appearance changed. I went from stiletto heels to sturdy walking shoes. I started looking unkempt and shabby, initially a deliberately cultivated look to be accepted by those whom I serve, and later a natural consequence of the kind of work I was doing.

People around me changed too. Many laughed. All were contemptuous. Most couldn’t understand why I would throw away a good income to start an NGO. Others accused me of exactly the opposite thing- of being desperate to make easy money, for isn’t that the reason why one starts an NGO in the first place? With two conflicting accusations being hurled at me at the same time, I wouldn’t know whether I was standing on my head or my heels.

And as for the uncertainty! The less I write about it the better. Words are not enough to describe the trials and tribulations I went through. Starting a social venture is bad enough, starting it without a sound financial plan to ensure sustainability is the height of absurdity. And putting your own savings in a social enterprise is the biggest financial folly one could ever commit. I thought my savings would last 5 years. They finished in one, like water trickling from a hole in a bucket. I had plunged headlong into choppy waters without the fear of drowning. Each day I managed to stay afloat was a miracle.

When you are a social entrepreneur, life is all about extremes. You swing from one end on the pendulum to the other. From the depths of despair you go to such euphoria that you are walking with your head in the clouds. There are days when everything goes wrong. You get sleepless nights wondering where the next round of funding is coming from, your best guy has been offered twice the salary by a rival foundation, and some government officer somewhere has absolutely refused to let you work in his fiefdom. Other days- you wake up and find yourself on top of the world for someone somewhere has recognised your work and your worth. One day you are accused of being a crook and a thief, next day, blasphemously, you are feted by the media as the next Mother Teresa. In 2014, the Schwab Foundation and the World Economic Forum selected me as Social Entrepreneur of the Year. I found myself rubbing shoulders with the Who’s Who of society and the hoi-polloi at Davos. I haven’t looked back since then.

But at all times there is an all-pervading undercurrent of anxiety. Social entrepreneurs thrive on the adrenalin rush created by the see-saw that is life. You may be fully sustainable, yet you can’t get over the feeling that you are like the wandering mendicants of yesteryears with a staff in one hand and a begging bowl in the other.

In this topsy-turvy world, few things happen to keep you going. Patients recover. Results are there for you to see. Children get back to school. Treated TB patients get back their jobs, and there’s money for food and to spare. Miraculously, funds start coming in time. Those that scoffed at you and laughed with derision give tolerant smiles. There’s an occasional pat on the back, a kind word. You go to bed happy and contented and you sleep well, for the Angels are back and hovering over you. And you know they are there for you and will protect you as they have done since childhood. For nobody else will.

Are Your Bedtime Habits Messing With Your Relationship?

Sleep impacts basically every aspect of our lives. Quality (and quantity) of shuteye keeps our mind and body in working order, and also plays an integral role in the success of our relationships. After all, irritability and crankiness from a lack of sleep aren’t exactly attractive qualities in a partner.

“If two people are feeling drained and worn down, they’re much less likely to respond to each other with caring support and love,” says Dr. Lee Land, a licensed psychologist based in Austin. “Without a doubt, sleep deprivation can lead to stress, tension and conflict in relationships.”

However, in addition to racking up those Zs, experts say what you and your sweetie do before bed can impact your relationship, too. We’ve teamed up with Sleep Number and consulted sleep and relationship professionals to find out how the most common bedtime habits of couples affect relationships.

Sleep Number®  beds are designed with couples in mind. Sleep Number® is committed to helping couples get their best possible sleep by creating beds that adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support—your Sleep Number® setting. Add our DualTemp™ layer to heat or cool each side of the bed, and you can both sleep exactly the way you like.

The Savage Wars of Peace

The Savage Wars of Peace

THE SAVAGE WARS OF PEACE by Darcy Vernier SYNOPSIS Jake Brabston was a Marine helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. On a recon mission he was shot down and was the only survivor. Two days in the rugged countryside, including one as a POW, have left him haunted and peripatetic. Were he in a western novel he would be called a “drifter.” Years later while working in a French Quarter strip club, he is recruited by his old commanding officer, Walt Macbeth, a man with many years in Africa, but unknown priorities. With nothing to keep him in New Orleans, and the belief that there are no bad flying jobs, Jake is off to the Sudan. When he accepted Macbeth’s offer he said that he just wanted to fly: “No do-gooder stuff.” Tamsin Amidon is an idealistic relief worker, dedicated to her work. She is beautiful, smart, sexy, and, normally, uninterested in any kind of commitment to anything but her job. She is the quintessential “do-gooder.” In many ways it is her story as much as it is Jake’s. While in Mombassa the two of them meet and fall, if not in love, certainly in lust. The longer they are together, Jake’s demons fall away and he understands more and more of the basis for Tamsin’s selfless dedication, and how empty his life has been. Bit by bit, he learns that it may be possible to achieve a balance, to even out the scale of lives lost, with lives saved. Tamsin teaches him to take “the small victories.” Together, the two of them share a number of adventures, which reflect the turbulent, dangerous part of the world in which they’re working. Friends are murdered by rampaging mohajadeen; the evacuation of a hospital is interrupted by government MiG fighters. Finally, while escorting a UN food barge headed up the Nile, Tamsin is kidnapped by government soldiers. She and two other relief workers witness the massacre of hundreds of Dinka families, an event which actually occurred in 1986. The others are killed and Tamsin is raped, brutalized, and left for dead. When Jake hears of the ba

Screaming McCarthy Ratchets It Up on ‘SNL’ To Slay Spicer Again

Melissa McCarthy’s White House press secretary Sean Spicer roared back to “Saturday Night Live” louder, angrier, more preposterous than ever  — and with a much bigger wad of chewing gum.

If Spicer himself thought it was time for “SNL” to tone down the mean, McCarthy only amped it up. She was even more explosive than ever as she attacked fake facts, extreme vetting, the Trump administration’s slam on Nordstrom’s, and scathingly mocked Spicer’s outlandish treatment of the media.

McCarthy’s “Spicey” struggled to control himself at the very start of a press conference in the cold open.

“Ok now I’m gonna’ open it up for questions and I’m probably gonna’ freak if you start asking stupid questions. Speaking of freaks and stupid ones, Glenn Thrush, New York Times, stupid hack, go,” McCarthy snapped.

When cast member Bobby Moynihan, playing Thrush, asked about the court decision against Trump’s travel ban, a furious Spicey pointed skyward, saying: “You’re testing me, big guy.” Spicey vowed to take it all the way to the “People’s Court.” When Thrush explained that it’s not a real court, a livid Spicey shouts: “Don’t eff with me, Glenn.”

The most jaw-dropping schtick was McCathy’s demonstration of Donald Trump’s new “extreme vetting” procedure by the TSA at airports. For the “dumb babies” reporters, McCarthy dragged “dollies” out of demonstration boxes marked with the presidential seal, including an agent in camouflage and a Barbie doll who’s “a nice American girl, back from her dream vacation,” Spicey explains. “We know she’s OK because she’s blond. So she gets in.”

Then McCarthy disgustedly pulled out black-haired “Moana.” “Uh-oh. Whoah. Whoah. Slow your roll, honey,” Spicey cautioned. “We’re going to pat her down, then we’re going to read her emails, and if we don’t like her answers — WHICH WE WON’T — BOOM! Guantanamo Bay.”

Spicey ripped the media for failing to report on terrorist attacks, like the Bowling Green Massacre — “not the Kellyanne one, the real one” — as well as the “Horror at Six Flags, the Slaughter at Fraggle Rock, and the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”

Then there was the “light terrorism” when Nordstrom’s dropped Ivanka Trump’s products. “Nordstrom’s loss,” explained McCarthy’s Spicer,  showing off one of Ivanka’s “bangles” on his wrist: “It’s beautiful, it’s shimmery, it’s elegant, and at $ 39.99 it is unbelievably affordable. Don’t even get me started” on the shoes, McCarthy added, hoisting a high-heeled foot.

McCarthy wrapped up the press conference citing crime statistics that 80 percent of the people in Chicago have been murdered, shouting: “And that’s on you.” Spicey took a leaf blower to a reporter who challenged the statistics bragging that he’ was “blowing away dishonesty.”

But threatened podium bashes return from last week with the final question from a reporter: “Just mentally, are you OK?” But this time Spicey had a mobile podium to chase down journalists.

10 Things Truly Confident People Do Differently

2017-02-09-1486663049-3269831-10ThingsTrulyConfidentPeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

True confidence–as opposed to the false confidence people project to mask their insecurities–has a look all its own. One thing is certain: truly confident people always have the upper hand over the doubtful and the skittish because they inspire others and they make things happen.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
– Henry Ford

Ford’s notion that your mentality has a powerful effect on your ability to succeed is seen in the results of a recent study at the University of Melbourne that showed that confident people earn higher wages and get promoted more quickly than anyone else.

Indeed, confident people have a profound impact on everyone they encounter. Yet, they achieve this only because they exert so much influence inside, on themselves.

We see only their outside. We see them innovate, speak their mind, and propel themselves forward toward bigger and better things.

And, yet, we’re missing the best part.

We don’t see the habits they develop to become so confident. It’s a labor of love that they pursue behind the scenes, every single day.

And while what people are influenced by changes with the season, the unique habits of truly confident people remain constant. Their focused pursuit is driven by these habits that you can emulate and absorb:

1. They speak with certainty. It’s rare to hear the truly confident utter phrases such as “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think.” Confident people speak assertively because they know that it’s difficult to get people to listen to you if you can’t deliver your ideas with conviction.

2. They seek out small victories. Confident people like to challenge themselves and compete, even when their efforts yield small victories. Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. The increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases their confidence and eagerness to tackle future challenges. When you have a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.

3. They exercise. A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher. Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference.

4. They don’t seek attention. People are turned off by those who are desperate for attention. Confident people know that being yourself is much more effective than trying to prove that you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what, or how many, people you know. Confident people always seem to bring the right attitude.

Confident people are masters of attention diffusion. When they’re receiving attention for an accomplishment, they quickly shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help get them there. They don’t crave approval or praise because they draw their self-worth from within.

5. They don’t pass judgment.
Confident people don’t pass judgment on others because they know that everyone has something to offer, and they don’t need to take other people down a notch in order to feel good about themselves. Comparing yourself to other people is limiting. Confident people don’t waste time sizing people up and worrying about whether or not they measure up to everyone they meet.

6. They get their happiness from within. Happiness is a critical element of confidence, because in order to be confident in what you do, you have to be happy with who you are. People who brim with confidence derive their sense of pleasure and satisfaction from their own accomplishments, as opposed to what other people think of their accomplishments.

7. They listen more than they speak.
People with confidence listen more than they speak because they don’t feel as though they have anything to prove. Confident people know that by actively listening and paying attention to others, they are much more likely to learn and grow. Instead of seeing interactions as opportunities to prove themselves to others, they focus on the interaction itself, because they know that this is a far more enjoyable and productive approach to people. If you struggle with this, emotional intelligence training can help.

8. They take risks. When confident people see an opportunity, they take it. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, they ask themselves, “What’s stopping me? Why can’t I do that?” and they go for it. Fear doesn’t hold them back because they know that if they never try, they will never succeed.

9. They aren’t afraid to be wrong. Confident people aren’t afraid to be proven wrong. They like putting their opinions out there to see if they hold up because they learn a lot from the times they are wrong and other people learn from them when they’re right. Self-assured people know what they are capable of and don’t treat being wrong as a personal slight.

10. They celebrate other people’s successes.
Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within. Instead of insecurely focusing inward, confident people focus outward, which allows them to see all the wonderful things that other people bring to the table. Praising people for their contributions is a natural result of this.

Bringing It All Together

Building confidence is a journey, not a destination. To become more confident you must be passionate in your pursuit of a greater future.

Please share your thoughts on confidence in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Love Needs To Be Remembered, Restored and Renewed

It’s that time of the year and love is in the air! Everywhere we see red hearts beaming from cards and boxes of chocolates, while a dozen roses just doesn’t have quite the right impact if they are yellow.

Every day we can read about the importance of love, how to get more of it, how to be the best at it, how to make it work, how to keep it alive, how to let go if it doesn’t work, and how to trust it and start the process all over again. Love appears to be the most important topic on our minds (along with elections, immigrants and teenage acne, to name but a few).

Learning to open the heart, to listen to, respect and trust what we feel, is one of life’s most powerful teachings. For the heart is more than just the center of love, it is also the center of our being, the place we point to when we talk about ourselves. When we say, “you have touched my heart” we are really saying “you have touched the deepest part of my being.”

We don’t have to go in search of love, or fear giving away so much that we have none left. We can never lose love; we can only lose sight of it. Love could not happen if it was not already an integral part of who we are. How can we lose what is our nature? How can we be left with nothing when love is the source of all life?

However, love rarely flows smoothly. We all experience conflicts, hurt or loss, and if the pain is too big to deal with we lock it away inside. This serves to lock us out of our heart. And when we become isolated from love we become mistrustful, uncaring, shallow, hateful, prejudiced and fearful.

Fear closes the heart so we can’t feel love, as when we close our arms and pull back in defense. Love comes from the open heart, when we open our arms wide to embrace another.

All this means that love needs to be remembered, restored and renewed. We remember by holding love close and feeling its presence; we restore those places where love has been forgotten or ignored; and we renew it by being aware of love in every moment.

The Indian government invited us to speak at a yoga conference being held in Pondicherry, in southern India.
When it was Ed’s turn to speak he talked about the beauty and awesome power of unconditional love. A man in the audience raised his hand.
“Please sir,” he said. “What is this love that you speak of? How do I get this love? Where can I find it?”
Ed replied: “You awake in love, you bathe in love, you eat in love, you walk in love, and you live in love. Love is within you; it is your true nature; it is who you really are.”
“Oh sir,” the man said, “You have all the right answers!”

Putting China on our Border

2017-02-11-1486794956-3708549-MexicoChina.jpg

Envision a scenario where China stationed military forces in Mexico. The recent imprudent actions in international relations by President Trump potentially created a new strategic threat. Worse, it could appear on our doorstep; our southern border with Mexico, and a wall would exacerbate, not alleviate, the problem. In a mere two weeks in control of the White House, with the exception of Russia, Trump has managed to alienate allies and adversaries alike. Members of his myopic support base seem to believe that these impetuous actions and bellicose statements are a show of strength or business acumen. In reality it demonstrates extreme naiveite that rise to a level of incompetence. A concern should be that China might now have access to geographic proximity to the U.S. never before imagined.

Though it began with his campaign rhetoric, in a short amount of time Trump has undone about two decades of friendly relations-building with Mexico. On a call this week with the former president of Mexico, Vincente Fox, I heard him mention that the people of Mexico feel they cannot trust the United States. Fox is not alone and many sources are stating that concern. It is not just President Enrique Peña Nieto and government officials, but the general population of Mexico who feel insulted and maligned by Trump’s inexcusable comments and accusations.

There is a reason that throughout Latin America we are known as the Colossus de Norte. Thanks to a failing education system, few Americans have any idea about how many times we have intervened militarily in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The people of these countries have not forgotten and they have reason to be concerned. There have been over a hundred U.S. troop deployments and covert interventions in internal affairs by the CIA in Latin America.

For the past two decades the United States and Mexico have been working on building stronger ties. While the ill-advised war on drugs brought many hardships on Mexico, one accomplishment was to bring both our governments, and many ordinary people, closer together. Mexico became a major trading partner, with many Mexican people desiring and buying American products. Already calls for boycotts can be heard as policies reflecting possible trade-war tactics reverberate.

Trump’s business model has been that of the bully. Just ask the many subcontractors he failed to pay for work they adequately completed. This is now our national policy. Trump no longer speaks for himself. Whatever he says reflects on our country, something he clearly fails to realize. Every word uttered, or tweeted, by a POTUS, is subject to intense scrutiny and analysis. No rational president would threaten to invade another country, and then claim they were joking. Trump did just that on 27 January suggesting he might send U.S. troops to straighten out the border issue with Mexico as there were “a bunch of bad hombres down there.” Even his new United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, in her initial talk affirmed bullying tactics stating, we “were taking names” of those countries that did not side with us.

There are three ways to deal with a bully. One is to capitulate, thus leading to greater problems. Another is to fight back attacking vulnerabilities. That is not always a successful approach for the smaller party. And the third, is to get a friend to assist. Mexico has already initiated option three. Rightfully concerned about viability of trade agreements with the U.S., they have reached out to China and begun to expand interaction with them. Several news agencies reported, “The Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretariat said in a release that the two countries ‘agreed to deepen the mutual trust and develop bilateral dialogue on topics of mutual interest through the Mexico-China Strategic Dialogue.'”

Considering what Trump has done regarding China, that is an alliance that makes perfect sense. Before ascending to office, his actions with Taiwan infuriated the Chinese government and countered decades of the standing U.S. One-China policy. After wise intervention by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Trump has just affirmed the previously existing policy. But given his erratic proclivities, that could change at any minute. China is a global power with aspirations for continued growth and a strategic plan to accomplish their mission. They are a major presence in Africa involved in resource extraction and infrastructure development. A comment made to me by an official in East Africa is striking. He indicated they liked Chinese assistance as it “came without strings attached.” Similarly, they have been courting most of the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. As reported by CNBC, “according to Americas Society/Council of the Americas, a New York City-based nonprofit organization, trade between China and Latin American countries rose 24-fold between 2000 and 2013.” It continues to grow.

The formal withdrawal from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) was greeted with optimism in China. In November the Wall Street Journal noted, “China is well prepared to step into the vacuum created by any U.S. withdrawal. It has pushed its special brand of global expansion for a decade based around “win-win” projects in emerging markets, such as African countries.” Large projects such as plans for a super-port in Brazil, the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite program, a proposed railroad from the Atlantic to Peru’s Pacific Coast, or plans for a new trans-isthmus canal through Nicaragua, exemplify their level of interests.

Australia has long been a close ally of the U.S., but Trump’s infamous call and egregious behavior toward the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, set those relations back as well. For Australia and New Zealand, the TPP was very important. They too are looking to China for better relations. Trump has been advocating serial bilateral trade agreements while disregarding that it inconsistent with the multipolar world as it exists today.

As Mexico prepares to deal with an unpredictable neighbor to the north, establishing greater ties with the Chinese military would be a logical step. That could take many forms but would not rule out basing rights for naval and air assets. If a further threat is perceived such an alliance could conceivably include stationing Chinese Army units in the northern areas. That could be done under the pretext of attempting to secure their border with the U.S. stemming illegal immigration and drug trafficking, just as Trump has asked Mexico to do.

Feasible, the potential for such a move should not be taken lightly. Elsewhere in the world China has engaged in provocative behavior. They have taken active measures to advance their claims of disputed territories, even after an international tribunal in The Hague ruled against them. Then too, there is the innovative, yet challenging, approach of creating new lands by dredging the sea.

Traditionally the U.S. Government has dealt with China as an entity that existed mainly in Asia with the Pacific Ocean serving as a barrier. We have acknowledged their expanding influence and done little to counter their moves. But consider having Chinese military units in close proximity. There is no thought that they would defeat American military forces should a confrontation occur. But, as with other dispersed units around the world, they would act as either a deterrent, or a tripwire that could lead to a major conflagration.

Trump repeatedly has stated he likes to be unpredictable. International relations are predicated on predictability. Therefore, being unpredictable equates to being unreliable and untrustworthy. He has already upset NATO. Even though there was backtracking, the NATO members understood the message. If unpredictability becomes an international norm, all participants must assume the worst-case scenarios and plan accordingly.

Also disturbing is Trump’s reliance on, and issuance of, demonstrably false data. The election was won convincing voters of a fearful world that did not exist. He has used this fear-based rationale in both the visa ban and executive orders ostensibly supporting law enforcement. In the first case, he raised the notion of imminent danger of terrorism from a body of refugees that has posed no threat to date. To support the law enforcement executive orders, he stated that murder rates that are the highest they have been in four decades. His puppet Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, responded by claiming the recent slight crime increase, “is a dangerous permanent trend that places the health and safety of the American people at risk.” Both comments are false and outrageous exaggerations. Such statements usually translate to an attempt to take rights away from individuals.

In 1964, under President Lyndon Johnson, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution expanded the war in Southeast Asia. At the time the data were classified, but believed by members of Congress. Assuming the U.S. Navy had been attacked twice, the members voted in favor of the resolution. The House voted 416-0 and the Senate 88-2. Only much later did we learn the second attack never happened. Then in 2002, under President George W. Bush, Congress voted to go to war with Iraq. Based again on mostly classified information, the stated reason for the supporting the effort was that Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction. The House voted 297-133-3 in favor, while the Senate vote was 77-23. Again, we later learned that Saddam did not have the weapons that took us to war nor was he involved with the 9/11 terrorist attack. Yet, by invading Iraq we did manage to further destabilize the Middle East.

Now we have a White House that is making unsupported claims of impending danger both foreign and domestic. This time the data are available to the public. Unfortunately, many of our citizens tend to believe demonstrable falsehoods coming from administration officials, including the President. It is time for all key figures, including both parties in Congress, the Judiciary, and members of the President’s Cabinet to step forward and act. Failure to do so will have unintended consequences that are irreparable. It is also a necessity that people inform their representatives that they will be held accountable if they collaborate with, or condone, the egregious acts perpetrated under the false guise of security.

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

Teen Voted ‘Best Dad’ For Taking His Sister To Father-Daughter Dance

A big brother stepped up when his little sister needed him most.

On Feb. 4, Mohammad Hasher, a 17-year-old who lives Michigan, woke up to find his 6-year-old sister, Noor, sitting on the couch wearing a peculiar outfit.

It was 10 a.m., and she wasn’t in her pajamas but instead wore a dress. The first-grader also looked upset.

“I was like, ‘Noor what in the world are you doing?’” Mohammad told the Huffington Post.

Noor told her brother that there was a big father-daughter dance at her school that night, and she wanted to go, but couldn’t. Mohammad told HuffPost that their parents got divorced in November, and their father hasn’t spoken to them since then. His absence has been really rough on the family, especially for Noor, who decided she was going to wear a dress that day anyway, even if she couldn’t go to the dance.

Mohammad made an immediate decision.

I told her I’d take her. And her face lit up! It was so cute.”
Mohammad Hasher, an awesome big bro

“I told her I’d take her,” he said. “And her face lit up! It was so cute.”

Later that afternoon, Mohammad took Noor shopping to make sure she looked her very best that night. He bought her a new dress, socks and shoes and brought her to a salon to get her hair done.

That night the siblings went to the dance and had a blast. Noor even got a box of candy when Mohammad won the title of “Best Dad” at the dance.

But that wasn’t Mohammad’s favorite part of the night.

“Seeing my sister do the Whip/Nae Nae was pretty cool,” he said.

The dance also gave Mohammad a serious case of the feels.

“The night was awesome,” he said. “It filled my heart with happiness seeing her dance with so much joy and have fun with all of her friends.”

Mohammad said his sis thanked him with a huge hug at the end of the night.

Touched by the experience, he posted pictures of their sweet soiree on Twitter:

”Got to take my baby sister to her first daddy daughter dance the other night,” he tweeted. “Sorry you don’t have a dad but I’ll always be there for you.”

The post soon went viral with over 104,000 likes and 25,000 retweets.

Mohammad feels that the night taught him a valuable lesson — that it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.

“It’s always important to be there for someone when you get the opportunity,” he said. “Especially family!”

Can a dying patient be a healthy person?

By Richard Gunderman, Indiana University and James W Lynch, University of Florida

The news was bad. Mimi, a woman in her early 80s, had been undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Her husband was being treated for bladder cancer. Recently, she developed chest pain, and a biopsy showed that she had developed a secondary tumor of the pleura, the space around one of her lungs. Her oncology team’s mission was to share this bad news.

Mimi’s case was far from unique. Each year in the U.S., over 1.6 million patients receive hospice care, a number that has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. What made Mimi’s case remarkable was not the grimness of her prognosis but her reaction to it.

When the members of the team walked into Mimi’s hospital room, she was lying in bed holding hands with her husband, who was perched beside her on his motorized wheelchair. The attending oncologist gulped, took a deep breath, and began to break the news as gently as he could. Expecting to meet a flood of tears, he finished by expressing how sorry he was.

To the team’s surprise, however, no tears flowed. Instead Mimi looked over at her husband with a broad smile and said, “Do you know what day this is?” Somewhat perplexed, the oncologist had to admit that he did not. “Today is very is special,” said Mimi, “because it was 60 years ago this very day that my Jim and I were married.”

The team members reacted to Mimi with astonishment. How could an elderly woman with an ailing husband who had just been told that she had a second, lethal cancer respond with a smile? Compounding the team’s amazement, she then went on to share how grateful she felt for the life she and her husband had shared.

Mimi thanked the attending oncologist and the members of the team for their care, remarking how difficult it must be to deliver bad news to very sick patients. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Mimi was expressing sympathy for the people caring for her, exhibiting a remarkable generosity of spirit in the face of a grim disease.

The members of the team walked out of Mimi’s room shaking their heads in amazement. Once they reached the hallway, the attending physician turned and addressed the group: “Mimi isn’t the only person in that room with cancer, but she is surely the sickest. And yet,” he continued, to nods all around, “she is also the healthiest of any of us.”

“Be thine own palace, or the world’s thy jail.”
– John Donne

Disease need not define us

Mimi’s reaction highlights a distinction between disease and illness, the importance of which is becoming increasingly apparent. Simply put, a body has a disease, but only a person can have an illness. Different people can respond very differently to the same diagnosis, and those differences sometimes correspond to demographic categories, such as male or female. Mimi is a beautiful example of the ability to respond with joy and gratitude in the face of even life’s seemingly darkest moments.

Consider another very different patient the cancer team met with shortly after Mimi. Ron, a man in his 40s who had been cured of lymphoma, arrived in the oncology clinic expecting the attending oncologist to sign a form stating that he could not work and therefore qualified for disability payments. So far as the attending knew, there was no reason Ron couldn’t hold a job.

Ron’s experience of disease was very different from Mimi’s, a phenomenon familiar to cancer physicians. Despite a dire prognosis, Mimi was full of gratitude. Ron, by contrast, though cured of his disease and apparently completely healthy, looked at his life with resentment, even anger. He felt deeply wronged by his bout with cancer and operated with a sense that others should do what they could to help make it up to him.

Mimi was dying but content with her life. Ron was healthy but filled with bitterness. Both patients had the same diagnosis – cancer – but the two human beings differed dramatically, and so too did their illness experiences. Mimi felt blessed by 60 years of a good marriage, while Ron saw in his cancer just one more example of how unfair life had been to him.

“Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so…”
– John Donne

The real meaning of health

When the members of the cancer team agreed that Mimi was the healthiest person in the room, they were thinking of health in terms of wholeness or integrity. In fact, the word health shares the same source as the word whole, implying completeness or fullness. Ron felt repeatedly slighted, but Mimi looked at life from a perspective of abundance.

A full life is not necessarily marked by material wealth, power over others, or fame. Many people who live richly do so modestly and quietly, never amassing fortunes, commanding legions, or seeing their picture in the newspaper. What enriches their lives is not success in the conventional sense but the knowledge that they have done their best to remain focused on what really matters.

Mimi easily called to mind many moments when she and those she cared about shared their company and their love. Any sense of regret or sorrow over what might have been quickly gave way to a sense of gratitude for what really was, still is, and will be. Her outlook on life was shaped by a deep conviction that it had a meaning that would transcend her own death.

When someone has built up a life ledger full of meaningful experiences, the prospect of serious illness and death often do not seem so threatening. For Mimi, who had lived most of her days with a keen awareness that they would not go on forever, death’s meaning had been transformed from “Life is pointless” to “Make every day count.”

Mimi regarded the prospect of dying as a lens through which to view the meaning of life. She saw her illness as another adventure through which she and Jim would pass. Death would separate them, but it would also draw them closer together, enabling them to see more clearly than ever how much their love meant to them.

From Mimi’s point of view, death is not a contaminant, fatally introduced to life at its final stage. Instead death is a fire that burns away all that is not essential, purifying a person’s vision of what is most real and most worth caring about. Though not happy to be ill, Mimi was in a profound sense grateful for death. Her sentiments echo those of the poet John Donne:

“One short sleep past and we wake eternally:
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.”

Michigan To End Subsidies Of Flint’s Water Bills

Gov. Rick Snyder has announced that the state of Michigan will stop subsidizing the water bills for residents of Flint later this month, nearly three years after the city’s drinking water was discovered to be contaminated with lead.

The move, announced by Flint on Thursday, will take effect Feb. 28 after state officials said the latest six-month test of the water supply showed drinking water was in compliance with federal regulations on lead and copper. The Michigan government has been providing water relief credits of 20 percent for businesses and 65 percent for homes, and officials said more than $ 40.4 million had been applied to customers’ bills.

“I am aware that the water quality in the City of Flint is improving and that is a good thing,” Mayor Karen Weaver said in a news release. “We knew the state’s assistance with these water related expenses would come to an end at some point, I just wish we were given more notice so we at City Hall, and the residents had more time to prepare for the changes.”

The state will also stop paying for water Flint receives from a separate utility provider, the Great Lakes Water Authority, for about $ 1.2 million a month.

In January, officials announced drinking water was finally in compliance with federal health standards, with a caveat that said some residents still couldn’t drink it until many of the city’s lead pipes were replaced. Weaver has said that about 20,000 lead-tainted pipes would need to be updated and that about 6,000 of those would be replaced by the end of the year.

Many have been forced to rely on bottled water for drinking, cooking and brushing their teeth. The bottled water has been available at distribution points around the city and, in some places, delivered door-to-door. Those distribution sites will remain open after the subsidies end.

The Detroit Free Press notes that, even before the crisis began, Flint residents paid the highest water rates in the country, nearly double the national average at about $ 860 a year.

State Sen. Jim Ananich, the leader of the Michigan Democratic Party, called the move to stop the subsidies “dumb and dangerous” on Twitter.

Weaver said the city will “continue working to fully recover from this water crisis,” despite the end of the subsidies, and officials will “make sure residents have the resources, services and support they need.”

“I appreciate all the work everyone has done to help the citizens and the City of Flint move forward,” she said.

The Local Food Revolution: How Humanity Will Feed Itself in Uncertain Times

The Influence of Chemistry on New Foods and Traditional Products

The Influence of Chemistry on New Foods and Traditional Products

This Brief concerns the influence of chemistry in the modern food and beverages industry. The world of traditional foods has been soundlessly but increasingly interconnected with the chemical industry in the last century. Different areas are considered in a multidisciplinary approach: – the production of chemical additives and of non-food components needed in the food industry (e.g. packaging materials)- the regulatory perspective of the whole food production chain – commercialization of food commodities- the problem of food safety from the viewpoint of official auditors with medical or veterinarian competencies- new and emerging risks related to food packaging materials- the assessment of the authenticity of edible products. This Brief includes different viewpoints, ranging from the management of allergens and food additives in the food plant to the complex matter of the formulation of traditional products with the consequent production of “alternative” versions of the same food.

Sen. Ted Cruz Calls Democrats ‘The Party Of The KKK’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) claimed Wednesday night that “the Democrats are the party of the Ku Klux Klan.”

Speaking on Fox News, Cruz blasted the party for its opposition to Jeff Sessions, who was confirmed as attorney general on Wednesday.

Critics had accused Sessions of racial bias, among other things, but Cruz attempted to turn it around on the Democrats.

“When the left doesn’t have any other arguments, they go and just accuse everyone of being a racist. It’s an ugly, ugly part of the modern Democratic Party,” he said on “America’s Newsroom.”

“You look at the most racist, you look at the Dixiecrats, they were Democrats who imposed segregation, imposed Jim Crow laws, who founded the Klan,” Cruz said. “The Klan was founded by a great many Democrats.”

However, historians say the KKK and its founding had nothing to do with what Cruz called the “modern Democratic Party.”

PolitiFact looked into the accusation when it came up in 2013 and called it false.

The KKK was indeed made up largely of Democrats in the South after the Civil War, as most whites in the South were Democrats, but it was not started by the party, historians told the website.

In addition, the modern Democratic and Republican parties are not what they were in the 19th century.

“The party lines of the 1860s/1870s are not the party lines of today,” Carole Emberton, an associate professor of history at the University at Buffalo, told PolitiFact. “Although the names stayed the same, the platforms of the two parties reversed each other in the mid-20th century, due in large part to white Dixiecrats’ flight out of the Democratic Party and into the Republican Party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

Is America Still A Nation of Immigrants?

The letter below was originally written after 9/11 as an open letter to a relative of mine who had worries about migrating to America. But it feels that it is especially relevant to our time. So here it is, revised.

Dear Cousin,

What is it like to be an immigrant in America these days? Is it still worth coming, you ask, and is the American dream still possible?

Your questions gave me pause. Who from Vietnam, after all, would have thought to ask them a few years back? Didn’t the American dream, or rather the dream of coming to America, cause the movement of millions in our homeland, and stir the soul of many millions more? It breaks my heart then to hear that you might not come. It is to me the worst news yet about my adopted country.

Yet it’s undeniable. The nation of immigrants is turning its back on immigrants once more. The immigrant’s hold on American soil has become increasingly tenuous. Even citizens now face a barrage of hate speech and many are being attacked in a rising wave of hate crimes. In schools, white students scream “build the wall” at their classmates who are Mexicans or Muslims.

“Build the wall” has become a racist mantra chanted by many around the country against non-whites.

2017-02-08-1486590726-9013476-gop2016trumpjpeg950be.jpg

Cousin, have you heard the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine? When it stops singing, it means the oxygen has run out, providing a warning to all.

In America, and in the context of a free and open society, often the immigrant is that canary. In economic down times he is often the first to be blamed. And amid the ongoing US war against terrorism, he is fast becoming a scapegoat.

After the 2016 election that ushered in Donald Trump as President of the United States, many hate-crime related incidents occurred in which the President’s name was invoked by the perpetrators, as if to sanction the violence and verbal abuse.

In the name of protection and security, immigrants’ rights are being eroded as I write. Foreign students and workers tremble. I’ve seen an old South Asian man whose hands shook at the airport when he gave his green card to immigration officers, fearing sudden arrest and deportation. I know an undocumented college student at Berkeley — he was brought to the US when he was three years old — who now fakes his address on any application for fear of being deported.

‘I have my hopes’

Yet I have my hopes. Americans rallied at airports in protest when Trump signed an executive order to keep certain groups of people out of the country, including green card holders. The protest against the new tyranny is strong and ongoing. I have hope to that the damage Trump is creating both at home and abroad can be mitigated by his growing unpopularity. After all, he is dismantling international institutions that have been in place since World War II, potentially returning the world to a state of competing nations with hard borders, high tariffs, trade wars, and gun boat diplomacy, turning against the forces of globalization.

And worse, in turning against America’s liberal values and our identity as a nation of immigrant, we are losing our strength in diversity.

Over the years I find it beneficial to look at this country through two different lenses: America versus the United States. The United States is a sovereign nation with permanent interests that is currently waging a war on terrorism. And it will trample upon innocents in its path, be it at home or abroad, if need be, in order to win it. In the process, the newcomer to this country, one without a voice and resources, often becomes collateral damage.

America, on the other hand, has everything you and I ever dreamed of: transparency, freedom, democracy, opportunity, due process, fair play and the promise of progress. America is where you work hard and earn respect.

The two versions exist in a kind of complex dance. In good times, America leads. In bad times, America is forgotten and the United States dances alone. These days, I fear that to be a patriotic immigrant is to love the ideals of America despite what the United States is doing in the name of security.

While I understand the logic of permanent interests, if America is destroyed in the process, then what is the use? And as far as I am concerned the only good patriotism is a civilized one. Blind patriotism always leads to bloody ends. To be patriotic is to dare ask questions. Must rights be abused in the name of security? Is it truly the country’s interest to demonize its minorities and its newcomers?

Dear cousin, I hope I haven’t completely frightened you, but the situation requires honesty. To reach American shores these days is a much more difficult undertaking, with fewer ready-made promises on the horizon.

I still want you to make this difficult journey, but you must be prepared for the challenges ahead. And I’ll let you in on a secret about this American dream you spoke so fondly of: it is you who must renew it. Without you, who dream the American dream, the country is in danger of becoming old. Without your energy, we would weaken. Even if we don’t know it yet, we all desperately need to be reborn through your eyes.

So, is the American Dream still alive? No, cousin, not really. Not without you at the table. Not without you prospering. Not without you.

Your Brain Actually Shrinks While You Sleep To Help You Learn

Ah, to sleep, perchance … to shrink your neural connections? That’s the conclusion of new research that examined subtle changes in the brain during sleep.

The researchers found that sleep provides a time when the brain’s synapses — the connections among neurons — shrink back by nearly 20 percent. During this time, the synapses rest and prepare for the next day, when they will grow stronger while receiving new input — that is, learning new things, the researchers said.

Without this reset, known as “synaptic homeostasis,” synapses could become overloaded and burned out, like an electrical outlet with too many appliances plugged in to it, the scientists said.

“Sleep is the perfect time to allow the synaptic renormalization to occur … because when we are awake, we are ‘slaves’ of the here and now, always attending some stimuli and learning something,” said study co-author Dr. Chiara Cirelli of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Sleep and Consciousness. [10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Brain]

“During sleep, we are much less preoccupied by the external world … and the brain can sample [or assess] all our synapses, and renormalize them in a smart way,” Cirelli told Live Science.

Cirelli and her colleague, Dr. Giulio Tononi, also of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, introduced this synaptic homeostasis hypothesis (SHY) in 2003.

Now, Cirelli and Tononi have direct visual evidence of SHY after observing the shrinking of synapses in mice while the animals slept, an intricate experiment spanning four years. The researchers described their findings today (Feb. 2) in the journal Science.

Sleep is the price people pay for brains that are able to keep learning new things, the researchers said.

Russell Foster, who directs the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, who was not associated with the study, called it a “very nice, clear piece of work.” The findings support the notion that sleep is necessary for the consolidation of memories and thus learning, Foster said.

For millennia, humans have probed the nature and purpose of sleep. Aristotle suggested that sleep was restorative, a time to replace or rebuild all that was burned up throughout the body during the day. Modern science supports this idea, with researchers identifying sets of genes associated with restoration and metabolic pathways that turn on only during sleep.

Cirelli and Tononi focused on sleep’s effect on the brain. In a paper published in 2003, they hypothesized about sleep’s role in the growth of synapses, which serve as avenues to ferry information among neurons. Synapses are constantly strengthening, or widening, during the day to accommodate the flow of traffic as the brain soaks up new experiences. But that strengthening cannot go on indefinitely, or else the synapses will become saturated — think “information overload.”

The researchers suggested in their earlier paper that synapses get pruned back during sleep. This pruning doesn’t necessarily cause the body to need sleep; rather, the body is taking advantage of the decreased brain traffic that occurs while an individual sleeps. [7 Mind-Bending Facts About Dreams]

To find evidence for this, the researchers used a new form of electron microscopy that can discern the miniscule changes in the shrinking and subsequent expansion of these microscopic synapses at the nanometer level in mice brains. They found that a few hours of sleep led to an 18 percent decrease in the size of the synapses on average.

Cirelli said that one interesting finding was that this pruning occurred in about 80 percent of the synapses but spared the largest ones. These larger synapses may be associated with the most stable and important memories, connections the brain does not want to lose, the researchers speculated. Yet, the way in which the brain decides what synaptic connections to prune is another mystery to explore, Cirelli said.

“It is critical to have pruning back at night, so that the huge amount of information encoded by temporary synapses during the day won’t overwhelm the brain,” said Foster. “Pruning ensures that only the most important information is retained.”

Foster said he can envision follow-on experiments based upon the Cirelli-Tononi work that would use mouse models to explore the connections among circadian rhythms (the body’s “internal clock”), sleep, synapse pruning and psychiatric disorders. Some of the key features of these disorders seem to be a disruption in neural circuitry, sleep disruption, and impaired cognition and memory, said Foster, who is also a co-author of the upcoming book “Circadian Rhythms: A Very Short Introduction,” (Oxford University Press, 2017).

Foster added that resetting synapses may be a core feature of sleep, particularly for humans, with their advanced cognitive abilities compared to other animals. However, pruning is likely to be just one of many essential functions that takes place during the sleep phase, a period during which the body takes advantage of physical inactivity to perform a range of essential housekeeping activities, he said.

So Aristotle wasn’t too far off.
